Men's Soccer Wins Season Opener, 3-1 Over St. John Fisher

BUFFALO, NY – Ramazani Juma's (Utica, NY/Proctor) free kick goal before halftime gave the Buffalo State men's soccer team a lead, and Pat Knudsen (Randaberg, Norway/St. Svithium) and Adam Saif (Lackawanna, NY/Coppell, TX) netted their first collegiate goals as the Bengals earned a hard-fought 3-1 victory over St. John Fisher in their season opener on Thursday evening at Coyer Field.

THE BASICS

LOCATION: Coyer Field - Buffalo, NY

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
  • Juma, Knudsen, and Saif all scored on their only shot attempts of the game.

  • The Bengals outshot the Cardinals 18-7, including a 10-2 edge in shots on target.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game started off with a lot of back-and-forth action in the midfield, but neither side was able to take control of the game.
  • After Hosa Omar (Lackawanna, NY/Lackawanna) earned a free kick just outside the penalty area, Juma stepped up and promptly curled a right-footed shot into the top right corner of the net to give the Bengals a 1-0 lead into halftime.
  • In the 63rd minute, Nacho Caceres (Hopewell, NY/John Jay) sent a cross field pass to Manu Prieto (Cascais, Portugal/Salesianos Do Estoril), but the Cardinals' goalkeeper made an excellent stop to deny a goal.
  • Three minutes later, St. John Fisher tied the score as Brennan Brown found the back of the net off an assist from Justin Bonetto.
  • Knudsen needed just 29 seconds to give Buffalo State the lead once again, blasting a shot that the keeper couldn't handle as the ball trickled across the goal line.
  • After a Bengals' red card in the 83rd minute, Buffalo State had to shift to a more defensive unit to defend against the Cardinals' pressure.
  • A St. John Fisher player earned a red card of his own in the final minute to bring the teams to an even ten players each.
  • Adam Saif made a full field run after intercepting a pass, and was brought down in the penalty area with 30 seconds remaining, and he slotted his spot kick to the bottom left corner as the keeper dove the other way.

FOR THE FOES
  • Jadon Schlierf made seven saves in goal in taking the loss.
