Buffalo State Hosts Fredonia in Battle by the Lake Tripleheader

WBB begins at 5:30, MHOC at 7:00, MBB at 7:30

BUFFALO, NY – Buffalo State hosts Fredonia in a "Battle by the Lake" tripleheader tonight with huge implications towards this year's Lake Erie Cup. The women's basketball game tips off at 5:30 pm from the Sports Arena, the men's hockey game begins at 7:00 pm from the Ice Arena, and the men's basketball game tips off at 7:30 pm from the Sports Arena.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Buffalo State enters play today with a record of 1-15 (0-9 SUNYAC) on the year. Tashawni Cornfield's (Gowanda, NY/Putnam) 19 points, six rebounds, and three blocks weren't enough as the Bengals fell 71-52 to Potsdam in a SUNYAC matchup last time out. Carly Atty (Tribes Hill, NY/Fonda-Fultonville) had six rebounds as well and a team-high three assists.

The Blue Devils enter play today with a record of 4-11 (1-9 SUNYAC) on the year. Last time out, Fredonia earned their first conference win of the season with a narrow 60-57 win over Plattsburgh behind Renee Park's 15 points and Sarah Seaman's 14 points. As a team, Fredonia was 7-8 (87.5%) from the free throw line.

All-time, Buffalo State has a commanding 43-19 record over Fredonia. The Bengals have won each of the last five matchups overall, including a 72-62 victory last February.
 
MEN'S HOCKEY
 
Buffalo State enters tonight with a 9-7-0 overall record (4-4-0 SUNYAC). The Bengals hold a 2-1 record in three non-conference games in the 2023 year. Nikita Kozyrev (Tallinn, Estonia/Springfield Jr. Blues) leads the SUNYAC with 19 points this season, while his 0.67 goals per game are 16th most in the country. Connor Bizal (Elk River, MN/Boston Jr. Rangers) is the top assister in the conference with 13 assists this season. Tyler Vanuden (Fort Frances, ON/Finlandia University) is second in the conference, and eighth in the nation, with three game-winning goals. The senior forward has netted the game winners against Lawrence, Franklin Pierce, and Alvernia. The Bengals have also been one of the best in the nation on special teams this season. Buffalo State scores on a conference-best conversion rate of 27.5% with the man advantage, fifth best in the nation. The Bengals also excel when down a man, successfully killing 88.2% of penalties, a mark that ranks them 15th in the country.
 
Fredonia enters with a 3-11-0 overall record (2-6-0 SUNYAC). The Blue Devils hold a 1-2 record in three non-conference contests in the new year. Ryan Bailey has netted 7 of Fredonia's 27 goals this season (25.9%). The Blue Devils average just 1.93 goals per game, the lowest mark in the conference, and have scored just one goal on 31 opportunities on the power play in SUNYAC action.
 
However, Fredonia holds a 43-17-10 edge over Buffalo State since 1993, including victories over the Bengals in the past three matchups.
 
MEN'S BASKETBALL

The Bengals enter tonight with a record of 1-14 (0-9 SUNYAC) on the year after dropping a 79-71 decision to Potsdam on Saturday. Matt Parkinson (Springfield gardens, NY/John Browne) netted a career-high 25 points for Buffalo State and has now recorded three straight games with at least 20 points, and could become the first Bengal since Justin Mitchell in 2013-14 to record four straight games with 20 or more points. Robert Richards (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) also had a strong showing with 15 points of his own, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

The Blue Devils come to Buffalo winless on the year with a record of 0-17 (0-10 SUNYAC) after falling to Plattsburgh by a final score of 78-74 last time out. Aaron Collins led Fredonia's offense with 24 points, while AJ Knight pitched in a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double. Fredonia also shot 9-9 from the free throw line.
 
All-time, Buffalo State has a 45-19 record against Fredonia. The Bengals came away with a 79-75 overtime victory in the last meeting of the teams, and have won six of the last seven overall matchups.
