Women's Volleyball Throttles Oswego State on Senior Day

BUFFALO, NY – McCartney Geartz (N. Tonawanda, NY/N. Tonawanda) had seven kills and seven blocks to lead the Buffalo State women's volleyball team to a decisive three-set victory over Oswego State on Friday evening at the Sports Arena.

  • Geartz set a season-best kill total, and also a career-high in blocks in the win.
  • Eden Harrison (Eldersburg, MD/Century) had six kills without an error for a .545 hitting percentage.
  • Samantha Coakley (Lockport, NY/Lockport) also had six kills.
  • Adi Vergara (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico/Kingdom Christian) led the Bengals with 12 digs, while Ella Wittman (Cheektowaga, NY/Springville-Griffith) had three service aces.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Buffalo State raced out to an early 7-3 lead after a 5-0 behind Wittman's serving. The Bengals extended their lead to 15-3 after an 8-0 run behind the serving of Karlie Shaffer (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown East).
  • Leading 23-9, the Bengals closed out the set after a kill by Geartz and a combo block by Geartz and Erin Mergler (Amherst, NY/Williamsville North).
  • Buffalo State led 16-14 in the second set, before a service ace by Jenna Hugenschmidt (Clarence Center, NY/Clarence) highlighted a 4-0 run to give the Bengals a six-point advantage.
  • After Oswego State pulled to within three, another combo block by Mergler and Geartz, and a kill by Geartz, closed out the set.
  • The Bengals never trailed in the third set, and led by as many as 13 after a 9-1 run behind serving from Wittman and Riley Domin (Getzville, NY/Williamsville South).
  • Another kill by Geartz closed out the match for the Bengals.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Cara Simplicio led Oswego with five kills.
 
SENIOR DAY
  • Prior to the match, Buffalo State honored its four seniors: Geartz, Mergler, Hugenschmidt, and Domin.
