Women's Volleyball Holds Off Rochester In Five Sets

ROCHESTER, NY – The Buffalo State women's volleyball team won a five-set thriller this afternoon against the University of Rochester to close out the regular season at the Louis Alexander Palestra.

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
  • Ella Wittman (Cheektowaga, NY/Springville Griffith) led the team with a match-high 15 kills.
  • Samantha Coakley (Lockport, NY/Lockport) and Erin Mergler (Amherst, NY/Williamsville North) had 12 and 11 kills, respectively.
  • Karlie Shaffer (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown East) tallied 21 assists.
  • Adi Vergara (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico/Kingdom Christian) registered a match-high 18 digs in the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both sides were dead even at the start of the match.
  • After the Bengals scored seven of nine points, the Bengals were able to rally the rest of the way and would eventually score the final four points capped off by a service ace from Shaffer.
  • The second set proved to be the most competitive as neither side pulled away.
  • After Buffalo State got the score to 24-21, the Yellowjackets rallied for four straight points.
  • The Bengals responded with three consecutive points to close out the set thanks to a service ace from Wittman.
  • The Yellowjackets bounced-back winning the third set scoring six of the last seven points.
  • After Buffalo State jumped out to a 6-1 lead, Rochester rallied back and forced a fifth set following a 9-3 run.
  • The Bengals were able to claim the final set taking advantage of mistakes from the Yellowjackets.
FOR THE FOES
  • Ruby Morre led the Yellowjackets with 14 kills and 11 digs.
  • McKenzie McDonald had a match-high 46 assists.
UP NEXT
The Bengals will travel to Brockport for the first round of the SUNYAC Tournament on Tuesday. Game time is set for 6:00 pm.
