Softball Wins Two on Final Day of Florida Trip

CLERMONT, FL – The Buffalo State softball team concluded THE Spring Games with a pair of victories on Saturday morning, coming from behind to defeat Westminter 6-5, and defeating Bates by run rule 13-3.

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORES
 
  • Sydney Bielicki was 6-for-7 for the day, including a pair of triples and five RBI to lead Buffalo State.
  • Sarah Congelosi (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central) had four hits.
  • Olivia Kowalik (Amherst, NY/Amherst) had three hits, drove in three runs, and scored three runs.
  • Kayla Wolinski (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) also had three hits and three RBI.
  • Oriana Castello (Pearl River, NY/Nanuet) reached base four times, and scored four runs.
  • Kaitlyn Schnitzer (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) pitched five innings in relief in game one to earn her third victory, while Madison Lucas (Oakdale, PA/West Allegheny) had the complete-game victory in the second game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Blue Jays took advantage of a pair of Buffalo State errors in the top of the first inning to score three runs.
  • The Bengals responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning, as Schnitzer drilled a two-out double to right center to drive in a run.
  • After another unearned run by Westminster in the third inning, Kowalik hammered a two-run double to left field, and Bielicki had a pinch-hit triple to right center to tie the score at 4-4.
  • Another hit by Bielicki in the bottom of the fifth inning drove in Kowalik to give the Bengals a 5-4 advantage.
  • The Blue Jays were able to tie the game up again in the sixth inning with back-to-back two-out hits.
  • Singles by Jenna Wlostowski (Lancaster, NY/Alden) and Congelosi, and a sacrifice bunt by Castello gave the Bengals runners on second and third with one out, and Sydney Shuta (Newburgh, NY/Marlboro) sent a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in the go-ahead run.
  • Schnitzer set the Westminster lineup down in order in the top of the seventh inning to secure the victory.

  • Emily Esquivel had three hits for the Blue Jays.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wolinski sent a double to right center to drive in Bielicki in the top of the first inning to give the Bengals an early lead.
  • The Bobcats scratched a run out in the bottom half of the inning to knot the score up at run.
  • Buffalo State struck for three runs in the second inning on back-to-back-to-back RBI hits by Wlostowski, Castello, and Bielicki.
  • Bates was able to pull a run back in the bottom half of the inning by taking advantage of a Buffalo State defensive misplay.
  • Caitlyn Parsons (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) had an RBI single, and Kowalik walked with the bases loaded to add two more runs for the Bengals in the fourth inning.
  • Buffalo State pounded out eight combined hits in the fifth and sixth innings to extend the lead to 13-2. 
  • The Bobcats scored a run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Lucas shut the door after that to secure the victory.
  • Every Buffalo State batter had at least one hit in the victory.
FOR THE FOES
  • Kennedy Jones had two hits for Bates.

UP NEXT
The Bengals will head back to New York tomorrow, will rest for a week before taking on St. John Fisher in non-conference action on April 5.
