Softball Comes From Behind in Game One, Shuts Out Fredonia in Game Two to Complete Doubleheader Sweep

FREDONIA, NY – The Buffalo State softball team earned a doubleheader sweep over SUNYAC rival Fredonia on Saturday afternoon, winning in comeback fashion in the opening game, before hammering out 12 runs on 17 hits to provide support behind Kaitlyn Schnitzer's (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) two-hit shutout in game two.
 
INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORES
  • Sarah Congelosi (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central) went 4-for-7, drove in three runs, and scored a pair of runs.
  • Schnitzer struck out 11 batters over six innings for her second shutout of the season, and also contributed two hits at the plate.
  • Kayla Wolinski was 3-for-5 for the day, hammering her first home run this season and driving in three runs.  
  • Caitlyn Parsons (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) went 3-for-7 with a pair of doubles and four RBI for the Bengals.
  • Jenna Wlostowski (Lancaster, NY/Alden) had three extra-base hits, including a pair of triples, and scored three runs.
  • Sydney Shuta (Newburgh, NY/Marlboro) had an RBI hit in each game of the doubleheader.
  • Sydney Bielicki (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) was 3-for-3 in game two with a pair of doubles, two RBIs, and two runs scored. She also extended her hitting streak to seven games.
  • Madison Lucas (Oakdale, PA/West Allegheny) allowed just two earned runs over seven innings with seven strikeouts in a game one complete-game victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wolinski's two-run homer down the left field line gave the Bengals the lead for good in the first inning.
  • The Bengals tacked on a pair of runs in the third inning, taking advantage of a Fredonia defensive miscue for one run, and Bielicki sent a RBI double to right center to drive in another run.
  • Congelosi singled in a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning to extend the lead to 6-0.
  • Buffalo State erupted for six runs in the sixth inning, coming on RBI hits by Bielicki, Wolinski, Abigail Kruse (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South), Schnitzer, Shuta, and Megan Galbraith (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter).
  • Schnitzer struck out the side in the sixth inning for the run-rule victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Fredonia struck first in the bottom of the second inning, scoring on a fielder's choice.
  • The Blue Devils held the 1-0 advantage until the fifth inning, when Wlostowski tripled and scored on a passed ball to tie the game at 1-1.
  • A RBI single by Avery Hill in the bottom half of the inning helped Fredonia regain the lead.
  • The Bengals broke through for four runs in the sixth inning to take the lead.
  • Wolinski was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on Parsons' double, before scoring the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Congelosi.
  • Galbraith entered the game as a pinch runner, and scored on a wild pitch to give the Bengals the lead.
  • Olivia Kowalik (Amherst, NY/Amherst) doubled down the left field line, and Deme Kellogg (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls) and Shuta followed with RBI singles to provide some insurance for Lucas.
  • Lucas pitched out of danger in the sixth and seventh innings for Buffalo State.
