Softball Walks Off Game One, Splits Doubleheader With Geneseo

BUFFALO, NY – Sydney Bielicki (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) walked off game one with an RBI single, as the Buffalo State softball team split a pair of SUNYAC contests on Saturday against two-time defending SUNYAC champion Geneseo.

  • Bielicki finished the day 4-for-5, and also drew two walks.
  • Oriana Castello (Pearl River, NY/Nanuet) had three hits and stole two bases.
  • Kayla Wolinski (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) chipped in a pair of hits, and drove in three runs.
  • Madison Lucas (Oakdale, PA/West Allegheny) threw a complete game, allowing just three earned runs in game one for her ninth win of the season.
  • Sarah Congelosi (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central), Deme Kellogg (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls), and Abigail Kruse (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) also contributed hits for the Bengals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
  • The Knights opened the game with back-to-back hits, but Lucas was able to limit the damage to just one run by inducing a strikeout and a groundout.
  • Bielicki helped manufacture a run to tie the score in the bottom of the first, walking, stealing a base, and coming home on Kruse's single into left center.
  • Lucas did not allow a hit over the next four innings for the Bengals.
  • Buffalo State scored a run in the bottom of the third, as Castello and Bielicki had consecutive hits, and Wolinski contributed an RBI grounder.
  • Wolinski's two-rule double to deep center drove in a pair of runs to make the score 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning.
  • The Knights scored a run in the top half of the sixth inning on a defensive miscommunication by the Bengals, and Erin Paolilli (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) made an excellent defensive play to rob Geneseo of an extra-base hit down the first base line.
  • The Knights knotted the score in the top of the seventh, as Kaitlyn Schmitz sent a two-run double to right center.
  • After reaching on a fielder's choice, Castello stole second, and scored from second on Bielicki's infield single to second base.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
  • The Knights scored one run in the top of the second inning, and exploded for seven runs in the third on seven hits to take an 8-0 lead.
  • Geneseo added three more runs in the fourth inning.
  • Buffalo State scored a run in the bottom half of the inning after Sam Schafer (Depew, NY/Lancaster) and Grace Albano (North Tonawanda, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) worked two-out walks, and Kellogg had an RBI single to right center.
  • Geneseo scored three more runs in the fifth inning, and the Bengals were unable to respond in their half.
 
FOR THE FOES
 
  • Audrey Minton had four hits in game two, while Leah VanDerwarker had three hits and five RBI.
  • Elizabeth Eberhardt struck out eight Bengals to earn the victory.
