Kaitlyn Schnitzer and Kayla Wolinski Lead Softball to Pair of Victories on Day Two of SUNYAC Championships

Bengals set for rematch with Geneseo tomorrow at 1:30 pm

NEW PALTZ, NY – Facing elimination, the Buffalo State softball team received huge performances from Kaitlyn Schnitzer (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) and Kayla Wolinski (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) to upset top-seeded New Paltz, 2-0 in extra innings, then defeat sixth-seeded Oneonta, 6-3, to advance to the third day at the SUNYAC Softball Championships. The Bengals will have a rematch against third-seeded Geneseo tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 pm.
 
INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORES
  • Schnitzer was phenomenal on the rubber, throwing an eight-inning, complete-game shutout in game one, and pitching two shutout innings in relief to record the save in game two.
  • Wolinski starred at the plate, going 5-for-8 with five RBIs, including 3-for-4 in game two against Oneonta.
  • Oriana Castello (Pearl River, NY/Nanuet) went 4-for-6 with a triple and three runs scored, including scoring the game-winning run in game one.
  • Sarah Congelosi (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central) had four hits at the plate, and fielded 14 chances perfectly at shortstop with eight putouts and six assists.
  • Jenna Wlostowski (Lancaster, NY/Alden) had three hits, and made multiple clutch diving catches in left field throughout the day.
  • Madison Lucas (Oakdale, PA/West Allegheny) recorded the win on the mound in game two, allowing just three runs in four innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Schnitzer pitched out of trouble in the first and third innings, inducing a pair of groundouts to strand a runner in scoring position with two outs in each inning.
  • The Bengals had runners on first and second with none out in the fourth after two New Paltz errors, but were unable to take advantage.
  • Wolinski led off the sixth with a single, but was stranded at second by solid pitching from the Hawks' Sydney Waldon.
  • The Bengals finally broke through with two runs in the eighth inning to earn the victory.
  • Castello led off the eighth with a triple to right center and came around to score on an RBI ground ball by Sydney Bielicki (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park). The throw from the second baseman got away from the first baseman and Bielicki advanced to third base.
  • Wolinski followed it up with a single up the middle to give the Bengals some insurance.
  • Schnitzer set New Paltz down in order in the bottom of the inning to secure the victory.
FOR THE FOES
  • Waldon took the hard-luck loss for the Hawks, allowing just one earned run over seven-plus innings on the mound.
 
GAME TWO BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Buffalo State – 6, Oneonta – 3

RECORDS: Buffalo State (25-14, 2-1 SUNYAC Tournament), Oneonta (18-22-1, 1-2 SUNYAC Tournament)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Buffalo State cashed in a run in the first inning on a Wolinski single to right field, then added a pair of runs in the second on another hit to right field by Wolinski, this time a two-run single.
  • Mya Hurley's (Amherst, NY/Amherst) RBI single in the third made it 4-0.
  • Oneonta responded with a pair of runs in the fourth on a Victoria Hussey two-run double.
  • After the first two runners reached for the Red Dragons in the fifth, Grace Albano (N. Tonawanda, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) came on in relief, limiting the damage to just one run.
  • Schnitzer came in to pitch in the sixth inning, retiring the side in order.
  • The Bengals added two runs of insurance in the bottom of the sixth, with Wolinski sending her third run-scoring hit of the game just out of the reach of a diving center fielder for Oneonta.
  • Caitlyn Parsons (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) followed with an RBI double off the fence in right field.
  • Schnitzer allowed just one single in the seventh, before securing the victory by inducing a foul pop up to Parsons at first base.
FOR THE FOES
  • Adriana Fiori had two hits to lead the Red Dragons.

  • The Bengals will face Geneseo tomorrow at 1:30 pm, with the results on tomorrow morning's contest determining if the matchup will be a semifinal or championship round contest.
