Samantha Coakley and Ella Wittman Star as Women's Volleyball Wins Two to Begin Bengal Challenge

BUFFALO, NY – Ella Wittman (Cheektowaga, NY/Springville Griffith) and Samantha Coakley (Lockport, NY/Lockport) combined for 58 kills across two matches as the Buffalo State women's volleyball team earned a pair of victories on day one of the 2023 Bengal Challenge.
 
GAME ONE BASICS

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
  • Wittman recorded a career-high 21 kills in the opening match, while Coakley had 14 kills and a .429 hitting percentage.
  • Eden Harrison (Eldersburg, MD/Century) had 13 kills and a pair of solo blocks.
  • Karlie Shaffer (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown East) dished out 28 assists, and paced Buffalo State with 17 digs, while fellow setter Riley Domin (Getzville, NY/Williamsville South) had 20 assists and 14 digs.
  • Adi Vergara (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico/Kingdom Christian) recorded fifteen digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Down 22-20 in the opening set, the Bengals rattled off four straight points, on kills by Wittman, McCartney Geartz (N. Tonawanda, NY/N. Tonawanda) and a pair of kills by Coakley, then finished the set one point later on a resounding kill by Coakley.
  • Trailing 15-14 in the second set, Buffalo State won 11 of the final 15 points to take a two-set-to-none advantage.
  • After a Wittman kill gave Buffalo State a 23-22 lead in the third set, the Lions won the final three points to force a fourth set.
  • Penn State Behrend used a 12-2 run in the fourth set to take a 23-12 advantage. The Bengals then responded with five straight point. However, the Lions were able to close out the set and force a tie-breaking set.
  • Buffalo State thoroughly dominated the fifth set, winning the first five points, eight of the first nine points, and taking a commanding 15-3 victory after back-to-back kills by Coakley.
FOR THE FOES
  • Hannah Phillips had 19 kills, while Sarah Nobach had 25 digs for the Lions.

  • Coakley registered 13 kills and a .440 hitting percentage.
  • Shaffer added 31 assists.
  • Delaney McCarthy (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West) recorded eight kills and a stellar .538 hitting percentage.
  • Vergara led the Buffalo State defense with 14 digs.
  • Maddie Hannon (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North) led the Bengals with three service aces.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bengals fell behind 12-10 in the opening set, before rattling off nine of the next 11 points to take a 18-14 advantage on the way to a 25-20 victory.
  • Buffalo State opened the second set on a 16-6 run, and stretched the lead to as many as 14 in a 25-11 win.
  • Trailing 20-18 in the third set, Buffalo State used a pair of service aces by Wittman, two kills by Coakley, and kills by Shaffer and Niaya Vohland (Lockport, NY/Lockport) to spark a 7-0 run to close out the match.
FOR THE FOES
  • Ainslie Reimer led Houghton with nine kills.
