Hannah Esslie Plays Hero for Women's Soccer in 2-1 Win at Houghton

HOUGHTON, NY – Hannah Esslie (Cairo, NY/Cairo-Durham) netted the game-winning goal in the 89th minute to lift the Buffalo State women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Houghton in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
  • Esslie's goal was her second of the season, and came on her only shot on goal of the game.
  • Elle Bush (Middleboro, MA/Middleboro) also netted her second goal of the season.
  • Eve DiCarlo (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) recorded a pair of assists.
  • Addy Williams (Grapevine, TX/Grapevine) register her first collegiate victory in goal, making four saves.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Each team had a shot on goal in the opening 15 minutes, but the goalies for each side made saves on the attempts.
  • The Highlanders had three corner kicks to Buffalo State's none in the opening half, but the game remained scoreless into halftime.
  • Less than three minutes into the second half, Bush netted the opening goal off of an assist from DiCarlo.
  • Bush had another opportunity one minute later, but her shot was saved by the Houghton goalie.
  • In the 57th minute, Houghton knotted the score at 1-1 on a goal by Elena Esh off an assist from Natalie Milne.
  • The game seemed destined for a draw until the last minutes, when Esslie found the back of the net for the first game-winning goal of her career, assisted once again by DiCarlo.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Houghton outshot Buffalo State 11-6, including a 5-4 advantage in shots on target.
  • Alliah Fluent made two saves in goal for the Highlanders.
