ALLIANCE, OH – The Buffalo State women's volleyball team wrapped up play at the Mount Union tournament on Saturday afternoon, dropping a pair of matches in straight sets to Mount Union and Albion. For the weekend,
Karlie Shaffer (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown East) was selected to the All-Tournament Team for her strong performances.
GAME 1 BASICS

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOXSCORE
- For the third consecutive match, Ella Wittman (Cheektowaga, NY/Springville Griffith) led the Bengals in kills, recording 10 kills on a .240 hitting percentage, as well as three service aces.
- McCartney Geartz (N. Tonawanda, NY/N. Tonawanda) recorded six total blocks, while Adi Vergara (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico/Kingdom Christian) registered 10 digs for the Bengal defense.
- Erin Mergler (Amherst, NY/Williamsville North) pitched in eight kills, and Karlie Shaffer (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown East) had 24 assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Tied at 7-7 in the opening set, Mount Union won six straight points to open up a 13-7 lead. The Bengals responded with three points in a row of their own thanks to a pair of blocks by Geartz and a kill by Mergler, before the Purple Raiders stretched the lead out again on the way to a 25-18 victory.
- Buffalo State held a 15-14 lead in the second set thanks to back-to-back kills by Geartz and Nicole Delli Colli (Rye, NY/Rye), but Mount Union went on an 11-4 run to take the set.
- The Purple Raiders opened the third set on an 11-4 run, but the Bengals rallied back to tie and eventually earn a set point opportunity at 24-23. However, Mount Union fought off the set point, and then won the next two points to claim the match.
FOR THE FOES
- Averi Haley had a match-high 15 digs, while Maddie Wentz recorded nine kills for Mount Union.

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOXSCORE
- Delli Colli was the leader in kills with nine of the team's 17 kills in the match.
- Vergara had her third straight double-digit digs game, with 12.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Albion controlled play for the entire first set, jumping out to an early 12-6 lead, and finished the set on a 13-4 run.
- The Britons led 10-4 in the second set, before a four-point run that included a kill and two service aces by Delli Colli brought the Bengals to within two points. The Britons then won nine of the next 10 points, and eventually took the set by a 25-16 score.
- Albion led from start to finish in the third set, holding a lead of as many as eight on the way to a 25-18 victory.
FOR THE FOES
- Olivia Alexander hit .448 with 14 kills for the Britons in the match, while also leading the team with 11 digs.
