Women's Volleyball Opens SUNYAC Play with 3-0 Win Over Oneonta

BUFFALO, NY – The Buffalo State women's volleyball team earned a thrilling three-set victory over Oneonta at home in the SUNYAC Opener on Friday evening at the Sports Arena.

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
  • Samantha Coakley (Lockport, NY/Lockport) led the Bengals with 12 kills, while Ella Wittman (Cheektowaga, NY/Springville Griffith) chipped in 11 kills.
  • Wittman also led the team with 14 digs, and Adi Vergara (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico/Kingdom Christian) posted double-digit digs with 10.
  • Karlie Shaffer (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown East) had 17 assists and two service aces, while Riley Domin (Getzville, NY/Williamsville South) had 13 assists and three aces.
  • McCartney Geartz totaled four blocks for the Bengals.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bengals raced out to an 11-6 lead in the opening set. Oneonta pulled to within one at 17-16, before Buffalo State closed the set on an 8-0 run behind Eden Harrison's (Eldersburg, MD/Century) serving, and a kill by Nicole Delli Colli (Rye, NY/Rye) to close on the 25-16 win.
  • Buffalo State once again started quickly in the second set, leading 9-5 early. The Red Dragons responded to earn a set point at 24-23, but the ensuing serve was out for a service error.
  • Back-to-back kills by Wittman closed out the set for Buffalo State.
  • With the score tied at 9-9 in the third set, Oneonta went on a 5-0 run to take a 14-9 lead. The Bengals immediately responded with five points of their own to tie the score at 14-14.
  • Buffalo State had a 24-23 lead thanks to a kill by Wittman, but the Red Dragons fought off the match. Delli Colli followed with another kill to give Buffalo State a second match point at 25-24, which was spoiled again by Oneonta.
  • After the Bengals fought off a set point by Oneonta, Coakley added a kill to make it 27-26.
  • The Red Dragons tied the score at 27-27, before a service error and an attack error by Oneonta gave Buffalo State the match.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Oneonta was led by 13 kills from Colleen McCabe, while Annalisa Alicea had 21 digs for Oneonta.

The Bengals are back at home tomorrow afternoon, hosting New Paltz for more SUNYAC action at 1 pm.
