Men’s Soccer Lasts in Senior Day Thriller, Holding onto Unbeaten Season

BUFFALO, NY – The Buffalo State men's soccer team held on in Senior Day scare, defeating the Plattsburgh State Cardinals 3-2, holding onto their undefeated SUNYAC and full season record.

  • Diego Rivera (East Meadow, NY/Cairo Durham) and Manu Prieto (Cascais, Portugal/Salesianos Do Estoril) led the Bengals with a goal and assist each.  
  • Shae Wirt (Overland Park, KS/St. Thomas Aquinas) finished with four saves in net, in a full-game performance.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gifted with a beautiful day at Coyer Field, the Bengals entered today's game with high spirits and high hopes, especially after celebrating their 2024-25 seniors. Play would begin back and forth, with both teams attempting to find an edge…which would lead to an Adam Webster (York, England/Woldgate College) goal in the 30th minute.
  • As the first half came to a close, the Bengals held the momentum in keeping the Cardinals off the board, carrying their 1-0 lead into the second half.
  • In the second half, the Cardinals would respond with in a fury, throwing haymakers to the Bengals defense and tying the game in the 57th minute. The Cardinals rode this new wave of momentum into a second goal in the 79th minute, taking the lead.
  • The Bengals would find their new hope of life, tying the game in the 79th minute from a penalty kick goal by Rivera. With the Cardinals on their heels, the Bengals would get a through-ball behind the Cardinals defense, leading to Prieto's goal in the 83rd minute, and taking the victory from the Cardinals.
  • The Bengals outshot the Cardinals 19 to 8, with 8 shots on goal. 
FOR THE FOES
  • John Hayes led the Cardinals with a goal and two shots on goal.
  • Teddy Healy completed a full-game performance for the Cardinals with five saves in net.
