#24 Men's Soccer Earns Tie With #20 Cortland To Clinch Top-Seed In SUNYAC Tournament

BUFFALO, NY – The #24 Buffalo State men's soccer team clinched a first-round bye and the top overall seed in the SUNYAC Tournament following a 1-1 draw with #20 Cortland this evening on Coyer Field.

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
  • Tapiwa Mushonga (Johannesburg, South Africa/Hilton College) scored his first goal as a Bengal while Manu Prieto (Cascais, Portugal/Salesianos do Estoril) picked up the assist.
  • Diego Rivera (East Meadow, NY/Cairo Durham) led the team with four total shots and three on goal.
  • Shae Wirt (Overland, Park, KS/St. Thomas Aquinas) made three saves in goal for the Bengals.
  • The Bengals will be the top overall seed in the SUNYAC Tournament and will have a first-round bye. They will then host the winner of Plattsburgh vs. New Paltz in the semifinal round on November 6 at Coyer Field.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  •  Buffalo State got the scoring started within the first ten minutes of action as Prieto found Mushonga in front of the goal on a corner kick opportunity.
  • The Red Dragons responded shortly after off a free-kick opportunity as they were able to even the score at 1-1.
  • Both sides were remain in a stalemate the rest of the half with an even score after 45 minutes of play.
  • Cortland had a chance to take the lead in the second half, however, the ball kicked out as it hit the top of the crossbar.
  • Each side attempted to get aggressive offensively, both both sides held up on the defensive front to hold a draw.
  • Cortland narrowly out shot the Bengals 12-11 overall.
     
FOR THE FOES
  • Alex Lessman scored the lone goal for the Red Dragons with Mateo Marra earning the assist.
  • Jordan Ott made six saves in goal for Cortland.
 
UP NEXT

The Bengals will finish off the regular season on Tuesday as they host Hobart for a non-conference matchup at 4:00 pm.
