Men's Basketball Comeback Comes Up Short With Penn State Behrend

GENEVA, NY – The Buffalo State men's basketball team fell short in their comeback effort against the Penn State Behrend Lions tonight with a final score of 64-57 at Bristol Gym.

  • Matt Parkinson (Springfield Gardens, NY/John Browne) paced the Bengals offense in his season debut with 16 points and six rebounds while shooting 3-5 from three point range.
  • Maley McCurty (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) added 12 points and nine rebounds while Bryce Williams (Jamaica, NY/Campus Magnet) chipped in 12 points of his own with a pair of assists.
  • The Bengals were aggressive on defense tallying eight steals and a block.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Buffalo State came out of the gates hot as they opened the scoring with an 11-0 start.
  • The Lions offense came to life shortly after with a 13-2 run to even the score at 13-all.
  • Penn State Behrend took control offensively and finished the half on a 14-7 run to carry a 27-18 lead into halftime.
  • Coming out of the half, the Lione grew their lead to a game-high 14 points.
  • The Bengals slowly tried to chip at the lead, getting it down to six with ten minutes to go.
  • Despite the late pressure from Buffalo State, the Lions were able to hold on for the win.
  • Penn State Behrend shot 50% from three-point range and tallied 39 total rebounds compared to Buffalo State's 29.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Mason Blankenberg led the Lions with a double-double performance scoring 12 points with 13 rebounds.
  • Tommy DiRienzo led the team with his game-high 18 points.
 
UP NEXT
The Bengals return to action tomorrow as they will battle Keuka in the consolation game of the Hobart Tournament.
