Men's Volleyball Sweeps Houghton

HOUGHTON, NY – Gavin Wilczewski (Elma, NY/East Aurora) tallied 12 kills, and Kaden Strong (Buffalo, NY/West Seneca East) chipped in 11 kills of his own, as the Buffalo State men's volleyball team swept Houghton on Tuesday evening.

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
  • Strong's 11 kills came on just 17 attempts for a .588 attack percentage.
  • Wilczewski wasn't far behind, registering a .435 hitting percentage.
  • Jackson Stang (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) had 34 assists, and seven digs to lead the Bengals.
  • Adam Cramer (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois) and Christopher Laboy (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Lafayette) each contributed seven digs as well.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Trailing 3-1 early in the first set, Buffalo State went on a 5-0 run to take a 6-3 lead thanks to a kill and service ace by Hayden McCue (Fairport, NY/Fairport) and a kill by Laboy.
  • The Bengals extended the lead to 20-11 after a combo block by Strong and Jake Woelfel (Buffalo, NY/West Seneca West), and cruised to a 25-16 win.
  • The Bengals led 13-7 in the second set after three straight kills by Wilczewski, and Houghton never got within five points the rest of the way as Buffalo State took the second set 25-18.
  • With the score tied 3-3 in the third set, the Highlanders scored four straight points. The Bengals responded with five straight points to make it 8-7.
  • With the score knotted at 15-15, a 5-0 run for the Bengals that included two kills by Strong and a kill by Laboy, made it 20-15.
  • Nate Lippitt (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) closed out the match with a kill on an overpass at 25-20.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Gabriel Lucena had a match-high 14 digs to lead Houghton.
 
UP NEXT
Buffalo State is back at home this weekend, hosting Houghton and Elmira in a tri-match on Saturday beginning at 12 pm.
