CLERMONT, FL – The Buffalo State softball team walked off game one in extra innings, and fell to No. 14 Tufts in game two for a split on the third day of play at THE Spring Games in Clermont, FL on Tuesday afternoon.
GAME ONE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Buffalo State – 2, Old Westbury – 1 (8 innings)

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
- Izzy Pezdek (Lancaster, NY/Grand Island) pitched eight innings for her first collegiate complete game, earning her second victory of the season by allowing just one run and five hits.
- Sarah Congelosi (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central) went 2-for-4, including the walk-off hit in the bottom of the eighth inning.
- Katie Pyszczek (Elma, NY/St. Mary's of Lancaster) and Caitlyn Parsons (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) each had a double.
- Lexi Quagliana (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) drove in the other Buffalo State run.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Buffalo State scored first with a run in the second inning, as Mya Hurley (Amherst, NY/Amherst) singled, went to third on Pyszczek's double to left center, and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Quagliana.
- Old Westbury tied the score in the top of the third on a two-out double to deep left field.
- In the top of the sixth inning, Old Westbury attempted to take advantage of a Buffalo State error on a sacrifice bunt, but Parsons made a strong throw to catcher Deme Kellogg (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls) to cut the runner down at home plate.
- The Panthers had another runner at third base in the seventh after a failed pickoff play at second base, but Pezdek worked out of danger by inducing a fly ball to left field for the final out of the inning.
- With the international tiebreaker in effect in the eighth inning, Old Westbury sacrificed the free runner to third base. After Pezdek got the second out with a shallow fly ball to left, Sydney Shuta (Newburgh, NY/Marlboro) made a spectacular diving catch in right field for the third out of the inning.
- In the bottom half of the inning, Kenzie Scott (Greene, NY/Greene) sacrificed Shuta over to third, and Congelosi sent a single through the right side to win the game for the Bengals.
FOR THE FOES
- Julia Pastrana was the hard-luck losing pitcher, tossing 7.1 innings and allowing two runs.
GAME TWO BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Tufts – 12, Buffalo State – 6

RECORDS: Tufts (7-0), Buffalo State (3-3)
INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
- Quagliana had two hits and drove in a pair of runs for the Bengals.
- Scott had her first collegiate hit, driving in two runs as well.
- Parsons and Pezdek each drove in a run for the Bengals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Buffalo State did all of its scoring in the top of the first inning, scoring six runs off of Tufts starting pitcher Claire Guitmann.
- After Congelosi led off the game with a walk, Kellogg sacrificed her over, and reached base on a throwing error. Pezdek followed with a sacrifice fly to drive in a run. Parsons then singled up the middle to drive in a run, and Quagliana and Scott each drive in two runs with two-out hits.
- Tufts responded by scoring two runs in the first inning, and three more in the second inning to make it 6-5.
- Buffalo State loaded the bases with one out in the third, but couldn't bring home any insurance runs.
- A pair of RBI doubles in the fourth inning gave Tufts the lead at 7-6.
- The Bengals got the potential-tying run to second base with one out in the sixth, but once again couldn't get the big hit.
- Tufts then scored five runs of insurance in the bottom half of the inning.
- The Bengals could only manage a single by Quagliana in the seventh inning.
FOR THE FOES
- Sophia DiCocco pitched six shutout innings in relief for the Jumbos to earn the win.
