Softball Splits Pair of Games against Union and Clarkson

CLERMONT, FL – The Buffalo State softball team split a pair of games on Thursday morning, winning a high-scoring contest against Union in game one, and falling by shutout in game two.   
 
GAME ONE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Buffalo State – 12, Union – 9
LOCATION: Hancock Field #3 – Clermont, FL
RECORDS: Buffalo State (4-3), Union (0-1)
 
INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
  • Sarah Congelosi (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central) went 4-for-5, drove in two runs and scored two runs.
  • Lexi Quagliana (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) was 2-for-3, driving in three runs and scoring two more runs.
  • Jean Rogers (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) was the winning pitcher, giving up one run in 1.1 innings of relief.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Buffalo State scored three runs in the second inning on just one hit, taking advantage of three walks by Union pitcher and a fielding error.
  • Megan Galbraith (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) walked to bring one run in, Quagliana scored on a wild pitch, and Congelosi delivered an RBI single up the middle.
  • Buffalo State tacked a pair of runs on in the third inning on one play, as Mya Hurley (Amherst, NY/Amherst) scored on a wild pitch, then Quagliana came around to score after the catcher made a throwing error.
  • Union pulled to within two at 5-3 in the bottom of the third on a three-run home run by Ellie Wintringer.
  • After the Bengals scored once in the fourth on a stolen base by Congelosi and two errors by the Union defense, the Garnett Chargers scored four runs to take a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
  • With Buffalo State trailing 8-6 in the sixth inning, the Bengals scored six runs to regain the lead.
  • Grace Albano (N. Tonawanda, NY/Niagara Wheatfield) led off the inning with a triple to left center, Congelosi drove her in with a bunt single, Caitlyn Parsons (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) brought in a run with a grounder and reached on an error, and Quagliana unloaded on a ball to deep center field to drive in three more runs.
  • Madison Lucas (Oakdale, PA/West Allegheny) came on to pitch the final two innings, allowing one run and securing the victory for the Bengals.  
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Wintringer had three hits and drove in four runs for the Garnett Chargers.

  • Izzy Pezdek (Lancaster, NY/Grand Island) pitched seven solid innings for the Bengals, allowing just two runs and five hits and striking out eight batters.       
  • Congelosi was 1-for-2 with a walk.
  • Kenzie Scott (Greene, NY/Greene) had a double for the Bengals, while Parsons added a hit for Buffalo State.
  • Kaitlyn Schnitzer (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) worked a pair of walks.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Clarkson scored the opening run in the third inning, coming through with a two-out RBI single up the middle.
  • The Bengals had runners on second and third with nobody out in the bottom of the third inning, but were unable to push across the tying run.
  • Buffalo State was held without a hit in the final four innings and had just three runners reach base via walks.
  • The Golden Knights came up with another two-out hit to drive in a run in the fifth inning for the final 2-0 score.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Devin Fitzpatrick pitched a shutout, allowing three hits and striking out six batters.
UP NEXT
The Bengals take on Washington and Jefferson tomorrow morning at 9:00 am, followed by Wisconsin-Eau Claire at 11:15 am.
