Women's Volleyball Holds Off Capital In Five-Set Thriller

BUFFALO, NY – The Buffalo State women's volleyball team opened their annual Bengal Challenge with a thriller win in five sets over Capital tonight at the Sports Arena.

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
  • Ella Wittman (Cheektowaga, NY/Springville Griffith) led the Bengals with 17 kills while also adding 17 digs.
  • Samantha Coakley (Lockport, NY/Lockport) added 15 kills and a .371 attack percentage.
  • Adi Vergara (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico/Kingdom Christian) had a team-high 19 digs while Karlie Shaffer (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown East) had a match-high 36 assists.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After the Comets jumped out to a quick 6-3 start, the Bengals gradually clawed back to eventually even the score at 15-all.
  • Despite going back-and-forth down the stretch, Buffalo State five of the last seven points to take the opening set following back-to-back attack errors from Capital.
  • The Comets dominated early in the second set with a 15-4 run and never looked back to even the match at one set apiece.
  • The two sides went back-and-forth again in the third set until the Comets started to pull away to have a late 23-20 lead.
  • Buffalo State rallied and scored six of seven to win the set.
  • Capital even the match in the fourth set forcing a decisive fifth and final set.
  • After the Bengals score five of the first six points, Capital responded with a 6-0 run.
  • The Bengals held strong scoring four of the final five points to win the match in a thriller.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Simone Daniel led the Comets with 16 kills.
  • Bryn Whitmer had 35 assists and 14 digs in the effort.
 
UP NEXT
The Bengals are back in action tomorrow as they battle St John Fisher and Pitt-Bradford to finish off the tournament.
