Softball Sweeps the Bears in Dominating Fashion

POTSDAM, NY – The Buffalo State softball team earned a double-header sweep against the SUNY Potsdam Bears, moving to a strong start in SUNYAC play.
 
GAME ONE BASICS

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
  • Madison Lucas (Oakdale, PA/West Allegheny) pitched a complete game shutout, striking out six batters and added two-hits on offense as well.
  • Mya Hurley (Williamsville, NY/Amherst) and Izzy Pezdek (Lancaster, NY/Grand Island) both smacked a home-run, with Pezdek gaining the extra RBI from a Lexi Quagliana (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) hit and stolen base.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Buffalo State got their offense out the way early in this matchup with the SUNY Potsdam Bears, with a three-run second inning, thanks to a pair of a home runs from Hurley and Pezdek.  
  • The Bengals would continue to get on base throughout the game, with a Pezdek double in the fourth inning.
  • Lucas would keep her shutout alive through the innings, slowing down the Bears offense the best she could.
  • After two singles from Grace Albano (North Tonawanda, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) and Lucas in the seventh inning, the Bengals couldn't add onto a strong performance. Luckily, Lucas would continue her dominance in the pitcher's circle, closing out the Bears and gaining a game one victory.

  • Kelsey Bennett led the Bears with two-hits.
  • Sam Horne would pitch all seven-innings, striking out to batters for the Bears.

  • Lucas continued her dominating day, leading the Bengals with four RBI's off two-hits which went for doubles.
  • Deme Kellogg (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls) wouldn't let Lucas have all the fun, as she also added three RBI's for the Bengals off three-hits while adding a stolen base. Ella Stewart (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) also added two RBI's on three-hits.
  • Hurley, Gigi Martinez (Chicago, IL/Whitney M. Young), Pezdek, Quagliana, and Natalie Burck (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville North) each picked up an RBI for the Bengals, with Albano picking up a triple on three-hits.
  • Jean Rogers (Schenectady, NY/ Mohonasen), Pezdek and Ella Susi (Lakeview, NY/Frontier) all pitched in this game, with Pezdek getting the win and Rogers leading with two-strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Following a strong showing from the Bengals defense in game one, the Bengals would follow suit with a dominating offensive performance in game two in this SUNYAC doubleheader against the Bears. Starting hot in the first inning, the Bengals would put up three runs and gaining an early lead over the Bears.
  • While the Bengals were able to add two more runs to their total in the top of the second inning, the Bears would respond with two runs of their own in the bottom of the second inning.
  • This would be enough for the Bengals to shutout the Bears in the third and fourth innings, while adding three more runs between the innings, which included two-runs in the top of the fourth inning.
  • The top of the fifth inning would see the Bengals turn it up a notch, rallying for seven-runs that including four doubles from Erin Paolilli (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington), Lucas, Kellogg, and Martinez. This would be more than enough to close out the Bears in five innings, securing their second SUNYAC doubleheader sweep of the season.
FOR THE FOES
  • Four different Bears would pick up an RBI, with Kelsey Bennett leading the team with two-hits.

The Bengals will remain on the road for the weekend, with a stop at Plattsburgh State in another SUNYAC battle with the Cardinals, tomorrow at 12:00 P.M.
