Congelosi Picks Up 100th Career Hit As Softball Sweeps Canton

CANTON, NY – The Buffalo State softball team had an offensive outburst combining for 25 runs and 33 hits as they swept the SUNY Canton Roos this afternoon in a SUNYAC matchup on the Canton Softball Field.

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
  • Ella Stewart (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) had an impressive day at the plate picking up three hits, a pair of RBI, and a run scored.
  • Gigi Martinez (Chicago, IL/Whiteny M. Young) and Erin Paolilli (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) each picked up a pair of hits as well.
  • Sarah Congelosi (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central) earned her 100th career hit with a two-run homer in the fifth inning.
  • Gianna Core (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) was spectacular on the mound going five shutout innings allowing just two hits with 10 strikeouts.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Buffalo State's offense was held quiet until the third inning. Stewart laced a single to center field before Madison Lucas (Oakdale, PA/West Allegheny) grounded out to allow Stewart to score.
  • The Bengals erupted for four runs in the fourth as Paolilli earned an RBI hit, Ashley Jedrich (Victor, NY/Victor) hit a sac fly, and Grace Albano (North Tonawanda, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) and Stewart had back-to-back RBI doubles.
  • In the fifth, the Bengals added three more runs as Emily Mullen (Buffalo, NY/Glenda Dawson (TX)) knocked in a run before Congelosi smacked her first career home run.
  • Core had a 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth inning as Buffalo State picked up the win in five innings.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Ace Rogers went five innings allowing seven earned runs with a strikeout.

  • Natalie Burck paced the Bengal offense with four hits and an RBI.
  • Congelosi and Jedrich each had three hits while Martinez picked up four RBI.
  • Ella Susi (Lakeview, NY/Frontier) went the distance allowing just four hits and a walk while striking out seven.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bengals offense picked up right where they left off with a pair of runs in the first inning.
  • Buffalo State then exploded for a seven-run second inning that featured Congelosi's second homer of the day, and RBI hits from Paolilli, Burck, and Lexi Quagliana (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South).
  • In the third, the Bengals added four more runs after a Jedrich single, a Martinez triple, and another base hit from Paolilli.
  • Martinez continued her strong second game with an RBI double in the fourth as Susi shut the door in the fifth to give the Bengals a double header sweep.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Rogers got the start in game two allowing 15 earned runs with a pair of walks and a pair of strikeouts.
