Men’s Soccer Cruises to Dominant Home Win Over Highlanders

BUFFALO, NY – The Buffalo State men's soccer team rolled to a commanding 4-0 victory over the Houghton University Highlanders in their latest home contest of the season.

  • Diego Rivera (East Meadow, NY/Cairo Durham) led the Bengals with a two-goal performance, eclipsing 100 career points in his three-years in the men's soccer program. Faisal Samim (Baldwinsville, NY/Liverpool) netted a goal for the Bengals as well, with Zaccaria Gerosa (New York, NY/U. of Nebraska HS) recording the lone assist in tonight's action.
  • Adrian Contreras (Madrid, Spain/Hipatia Fuhem) made the start in net for the Bengals, making two-saves in his shutout win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Coming off a tough road loss to Grove City, the Bengals looked to get back in the win column as they hosted the Houghton University Highlanders. The Bengals wasted no time finding their rhythm, striking first with a goal in the 9th minute. As the half wore on, the Highlanders pushed forward searching for an equalizer, but the Bengals' defense held firm. Their effort was rewarded late in the half when an own goal by Houghton extended the Bengals' lead to 2-0, giving them a commanding advantage heading into the break.
  • The second half saw more of the same from the Bengals' backline, which continued to frustrate the Highlanders' attack. As the Highlanders generated a brief offensive surge, but the Bengals stayed organized and turned away every opportunity. The Bengals' persistence paid off late, as they netted goals in the 84th and 89th minutes to seal a convincing 4-0 victory.
FOR THE FOES
  • James Fay and Isaiah McCarthy were each credited with a shot on goal for the Highlanders.
  • Pedro Ruz Walker and Joshua Smith split halves In net, with Smith leading with five saves.
UP NEXT
The Bengals will have a few days off before returning to Coyer Field to host Skyway rival Hilbert College on Saturday, September 20, at 1:00 P.M.
