Women’s Lacrosse Picks Up First SUNYAC Win Over the Cardinals

PLATTSBURGH, NY – The Buffalo State women's lacrosse team defeated the Plattsburgh State Cardinals, 14-6, on the road to score their first SUNYAC win of the season.

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE  

  • Vanessa Willick (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) and Emilee Josker (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) led the Bengals with six points each. Josker scored four goals and had two assists. Willick scored six goals in today's contest. Her six-goal performance puts her at 23 goals for the season. This surpasses Katie Henderson's 185 career goals and moves Willick into second place with 189 career goals!
  • Outside of Willick and Josker, Kaylee Cadez (Temecula, CA/Temecula Valley) had a five-point day. She scored a goal and added four assists. Kira Grzechowiak (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) also had a multi-point game with three goals.
  • On defense, Cadez, Josker, and Syrianna Running Rabbit (Siksika, AB/Outreach) each caused three turnovers. Willick contributed with four ground balls and eight draw controls.
  • Brielle Lum (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) picked up the win in net, making five saves. Moria Penot (Clifton Heights, PA/Upper Darby) also saw time and made a save for the Bengals.
  • The Bengals outshot the Cardinals, 22-12, while winning the draw control battle, 12-10.  

HOW IT HAPPENED  

  • After playing five of their first six games at Coyer Field, the Bengals finally hit the road to battle the Plattsburgh State Cardinals in their SUNYAC opener.
  • In the opening quarter, the Bengals jumped ahead of the Cardinals by netting back-to-back goals in the opening minutes. As the game progressed, the Cardinals answered with a goal midway through the quarter, and the Bengals ended the first with a one-goal lead.
  • The second quarter started off slowly. Both teams' defenses made it tough at each end. The Bengals broke the lull with a goal in the 10th minute. The Cardinals responded minutes later. The Bengals finished strong with back-to-back goals late in the quarter. The Cardinals scored seconds later, cutting the Bengals' lead to two. The Bengals carried a two-goal advantage into halftime.
  • With momentum, the Bengals opened the second half with a quick goal, increasing their lead to three. Both teams traded goals in a high-scoring third quarter. The Bengals kept pressing, scoring four goals to the Cardinals' two, and entered the final quarter with a four-goal lead.
  • In the fourth quarter, the Bengals pressed harder. They limited the Cardinals to one goal and added five more of their own. The Bengals closed out the Cardinals on the road to earn their first SUNYAC win of the season.  

FOR THE FOES  

  • Ashley O'Hara and Leah Koltz each tallied three points. Juliana Conley grabbed a team-high five ground balls for the Cardinals.
  • Lauren Piscazzi made eight saves, leading all players in the game for total saves recorded.

The Bengals will stay on the road as they close out their non-conference portion of their schedule with a visit to Alfred State College next Tuesday, March 24th, at 7:00 PM.
