Rowan Defeats Football, 20-7

Matt Pacana made 16 tackles for the Bengals
BUFFALO, NY—Rowan (6-1/5-1) held Buffalo State (0-7/0-6) to just 115 yards of total as the Profs improved to 13-1 all-time against the Bengals with a 20-7 victory in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game today on a soggy afternoon at Coyer Field.

Buffalo State's defense did a formidable job as well, surrendering just 58 passing yards, but Rowan accumulated 246 yards on the ground.

Rowan quarterback Frank Wilczynski (Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook) was just 8 of 19 for 58 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions, but led the rushing attack with eight runs for 82 yards, including a 42-yard scoring run on a third-and-11 play in the fourth quarter. Drew Yezzi (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) anchored the defense with 10 tackles. Justin Hinds (Pt. Reading, NJ/Woodbridge) added six stops and 1.5 sacks for the Profs.

Kenny Murphy (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) was just 5 of 16 for 41 yards with an interception for Buffalo State. Sammy Smith (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) led the Bengals on the ground with 18 carries for 61 yards. Matt Pacana (N. Tonawanda, NY/N. Tonawanda) recorded a career-best 16 tackles and a sack. Paul Gruber (Levittown, NY/Division Avenue) added 15 stops, and Jermaine Rose (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) had 10 tackles, including 2.5 for loss. Joe Schriever (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) had two interceptions.

Davon Edwards (Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Twp.) broke a 48-yard run on the Profs first possession to set up a 14-yard touchdown strike from Wilczynski to Ryan Leafey (Westville, NJ/Deptford) to open the scoring.

The only other scoring in the opening half came on a pair of botched punt attempts. After Rowan's Andrew Smith (Howell, NJ/Freehold Twp.) fumbled a snap in the end zone, Brian Lavis (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) recovered the ball to pull the Bengals even at 7-7. Buffalo State suffered its own punting woes on its next possession, however, when Jerome Gordon (Pemberton, NJ/Pemberton) busted through and blocked Scott Forster's (E. Otto, NY/Catt-Little Valley) punt through the end zone for a safety, giving the Profs a 9-7 advantage.

Mark Getsinger (Deptford, NJ/Deptford) hit a 29-yard field goal for the only score of the third quarter that capped Rowan's first possession of the second half, which covered 77 yards in 13 plays.

After Wilczynski's 42-yard run pushed the score to 18-7, the Profs completed the scoring with a safety when Hinds and Matt Hoffman (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Twp.) teamed to sack Murphy in the end zone. Buffalo State had started with the ball after the touchdown at its own 20, and lost 4, 11 and 5 yards on consecutive plays for the safety.

Buffalo State will play at William Paterson next Saturday. Rowan will host Kean.
