RUTLAND, Vt.—Courtney Carnes (Winslow, ME/Winslow) had a goal and an assist, but Castleton (1-1) netted the game-winning goal with under a minute remaining, clinching a 3-2 win over visiting Buffalo State (1-1) in non-conference game this afternoon at Spartan Arena.

Kailyn Murray (Medicine Hat, AB/Warner Hockey School) opened the scoring in the first period for the Bengals, redirecting a point shot from Katie Olejarski (Rockford, IL/Boylan Catholic). Castleton evened the score with the lone goal of the second period, before the Bengals reclaimed the lead early in the final period on a goal by Carnes with an assist from Melissa Ash (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley). The Spartans answered quickly, however, netting the equalizer just one minute and 45 seconds later, and then tallied the winner with just 44 seconds remaining in regulation.

Castleton held a narrow 24-21 advantage in shots. Alyssa Koniar (New Berlin, WI/U. School of Milwaukee) made 21 saves in goal for the Bengals.

Buffalo State will open ECAC West play at home on Friday against Utica at 7 p.m.
