BUFFALO, NY—
Kailyn Murray (Medicine Hat, AB/Warner Hockey School) scored the game-winning goal in overtime as Buffalo State (8-14/4-12) upset No. 6 Elmira (16-6-2/12-3-2), 4-3, in an ECAC West game today at the Ice Arena.
Christine Williams (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) and
Bri Murphy (Depew, NY/Lancaster) led the Bengals with a goal and two assists each. Murray finished with a goal and an assist and
Alanna McMullen (Calgary, AB/Warner Hockey School) also scored for Buffalo State.
Courtney Carnes (Winslow, ME/Winslow) and
Caralie Fennessey (Fairport, NY/Fairport) each chipped in a helper.
After a scoreless first period, the two teams traded goals in the second and took a 2-2 tie into intermission. Buffalo State took its first lead of the game at the 13:39 mark of the third stanza, but Elmira responded less than three minutes later on the power play to force overtime. Both teams had three shots in the extra period, with Murray's goal coming with less than two minutes to play.
Both teams went 1 for 5 with the extra skater. Elmira outshot Buffalo State, 37-24.
Alyssa Koniar (New Berlin, WI/Univ. School of Milwaukee) stopped 34 shots and with the win, became the all-time winningest goaltender in program history with 18 career victories.
This is the first time Buffalo State has defeated Elmira, as the Soaring Eagles had won the previous 25 meetings.
Buffalo State will wrap up its 2011 season next weekend with a two-game set at Cortland.
