BROCKPORT, NY—Buffalo State (13-9/8-8) earned its 13th win of the season, the most in a single season since finishing with 13 in 2003-04, defeating host Brockport (6-17/4-12), 62-59, in a SUNYAC contest this evening at Vlogianitis Gymnasium.
Staci McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) led the Bengals with 19 points and added seven rebounds.
Sarah Thompson (Delmar/Bethlehem) added 13 points and six boards,
Barb Kiliszek (Depew/Lancaster) had 11 points, and
Dee Layne (Brooklyn/E. NY Family) had nine points and seven boards.
Buffalo State led 38-24 at halftime, but Brockport stormed back and tied the score twice in the second half, including at 59-59. The Bengals tightened their defense and did not allow the Golden Eagles to score again in the final 1:54 of the game. Buffalo State broke the tie, hitting 3 of 4 free throws in the final minute. Brockport shot 50-percent from the field for the game, but Buffalo State used a rebounding and turnover advantage to take 15 additional shots. Buffalo State also outscored the Golden Eagles 12-5 from the free-throw line.
Buffalo State will host Plattsburgh on Friday at 6 p.m. The Bengals will wear pink uniforms in that game as part of the WBCA Pink Zone initiative to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research.
