BUFFALO, NY—
Courtney Carnes (Winslow, ME/Winslow) had two goals and an assist to lead Buffalo State (1-0) to a season-opening 6-2 victory over visiting Stevenson University (0-1) this afternoon at the Ice Arena.
Kara Goodwin (Avon Lake, OH/Avon Lake) and
Jeyna Minnick (Rochester/Greece-Arcadia) had a goal and two assists each for the Bengals.
Christina Zandri (Baldwinsville/CW Baker) added a goal and an assist, and
Emily Cornett (Damascus, MD/Wyoming Seminary) also scored.
Minnick opened the scoring late in the first period, before Cornett extended the lead just over two minutes later. The Bengals added a shorthanded goal and two power-play markers in the second to push the lead to 5-0 before Stevenson finally got on the board. Goodwin scored another power-play goal in the third, and the Mustangs added a late tally to complete the scoring.
Buffalo State finished 3 for 6 on the power play, and Stevenson was 1 for 9.
Jordan Lee (Colorado Springs, CO/Widefield) earned the win, allowing just one goal on 21 shots in the first two periods, before
Sarah Quigley (Canton, MA/National Sports Acad.) had 10 stops on 11 shots in the third.
The victory marked the 50th in the head coaching career of Buffalo State's Rob Burke.
Buffalo State will host Stevenson again tomorrow for a noon faceoff.
