BUFFALO, NY—Cortland (5-14-1/3-12-1) scored a pair of second period goals to skate past Buffalo State (7-14-2/4-11-1), 3-1, in an ECAC West game this afternoon at the Ice Arena.
Courtney Carnes (Winslow, ME/Winslow) scored the Bengals' lone goal, assisted by
Tara Boliard (Canton, MI/Canton) and
Leah Knott (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson).
After a scoreless first period, the Red Dragons lit the lamp at 7:49, but the Bengals evened things at 1-1 less than six minutes later when Carnes found the back of the net for her eighth goal of the season and second in as many games. The tie was short-lived as Cortland scored the game winner just under a minute later and added an insurance marker in the third stanza.
Cortland was 1 for 6 on the power play, compared to Buffalo State's 0 for 4 performance.
Jessica Garland (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) had 23 saves in the loss.
Prior to the game, the Bengals recognized the five seniors –
Shayna McKie (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius), Garland,
Christine Williams (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls), Knott and
Brianna Murphy (Depew, NY/Lancaster) – playing in the final home game of their collegiate careers.
Buffalo State will close out its regular season with a pair of conference games against Utica next Friday and Saturday.
