Jake Simmons (Rochester/School of the Arts) netted 31 points and brought his career scoring total to 1,996 points, but Buffalo State (12-8/7-7) dropped an important SUNYAC matchup, 86-81, at New Paltz (9-13/7-8) this afternoon.
Simmons was 12 of 25 from the field, but just 3 of 14 from 3-point range.
Roderick Epps (Uniondale/Uniondale) added 15 points on 5 of 17 shooting, including going 0 for 5 from beyond the arc.
Ryan Carney (Olean/Olean) chipped in 10 points, and
Seth Runge (Springville/Springville GI) had nine points and seven rebounds.
Buffalo State led 41-37 at the intermission. The Bengals held their final lead of the game at 66-65 with just over eight minutes remaining, however. New Paltz went on a 12-2 run from there and never looked back.
Buffalo State shot just 37-percent from the field and finished 5 of 26 from 3-point range. New Paltz shot 39-percent and was just 2 of 20 from long range. The Hawks outscored Buffalo State 26-16 at the free throw line and dominated the glass, outrebounding Buffalo State 62-39.
Buffalo State will return home on Friday night against Plattsburgh at 8 p.m.
