Megan Niesyty (East Amherst, NY/Clarence) recorded her first collegiate goal, scoring the game winner late in the second period to lift Buffalo State (2-15/2-8) to a 3-2 win over visiting Cortland (2-12-2/1-8-1) in an ECAC West game this afternoon at the Ice Arena.
After a scoreless first period, the two teams traded goals in the second period, with Cortland striking first at the 2:04 mark. The Bengals answered when
Jeyna Minnick (Rochester, NY/Greece-Arcadia) scored just over three minutes later. Buffalo State would then take a 2-1 lead when
Kara Goodwin (Avon Lake, OH/Avon Lake) netted her team-leading eighth goal of the season off a pass from
Morgan Haettich (Buffalo, NY/Mount Mercy). The Red Dragons got the equalizer at 15:22, but Niesyty closed out all scoring with the game-winning goal. Minnick and
Christina Zandri (Baldwinsville, NY/CW Baker) were also credited with assists.
Cortland outshot Buffalo State, 32-25, and both teams unsuccessful on the power play, with the Red Dragons finishing 0 for 5, while the Bengals were 0 for 3.
Jordan Lee (Colorado Springs, CO/Widefield) had 30 saves in the win, including a few key stops in the final minutes to preserve the win.
Buffalo State will next play at No. 3-ranked Elmira on Saturday at 3 p.m.
