BUFFALO, NY – The Buffalo State women's lacrosse program finished one of the best seasons in program history that saw a postseason berth for the first time since 2018 and their first playoff win since the 2012 season.
After finishing the 2025 season with a record of 12-7 (5-4 SUNYAC), the Bengals posted their most overall wins and conference wins since the 2012 season and had one of the best offensive seasons in program history. The Bengals scored 285 goals with 107 assists for 392 points. That goal and point total is the highest since 2012 and their assist total is the highest since the 2019 season. Buffalo State also saw their most groundballs (459), caused turnovers (226), and draw controls (309) since at least the 2004 season. In addition, the Bengals set the program record for most goals in a game with 29 and matched most goals in a half twice with 16.
Buffalo State entered conference play with a record of 4-1. After dominating Plattsburgh to open the SUNYAC schedule, Buffalo State fell in a close matchup against Piedmont before rallying for six straight wins. Despite dropping their final four regular season games, the team secured the five seed as they were in the SUNYAC Playoffs for the first time in seven years. After falling to Oneonta in overtime in heartbreaking fashion during the regular season, the Bengals first playoff game was a rematch with the Red Dragons. Trailing 12-10 in the fourth, the Bengals rallied for six unanswered goals to advance to the SUNYAC Semifinals for the first time in over a decade. In the semifinal game at Oswego, Buffalo State pushed the Lakers to the end. Oswego was able to score a trio of goals in the final minutes to secure the win and end the Bengals season.
Despite falling just short of reaching the SUNYAC Championship, multiple individuals stamped their names into the record books. Earning a Third Team All-SUNYAC selection,
Vanessa Willick (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) put up one of the best offensive seasons in program history. Willick finished the year with 101 points, 80 goals, 21 assists, 63 ground balls, 25 caused turnovers, and 146 draw controls. She quickly climbed to sixth in program history in scoring while also placing herself in the top-five in program history in career ground balls, shots, and goals. The season also saw
Sage Running Rabbit (Siksika, AB/Strathmore) and
Lauren Rinow (Lakeview, NY/Frontier) reach the top-20 in program history in scoring and
Anastacia Wells (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) set program records for career ground balls (161) and caused turnovers (131).
Overall, the women's lacrosse team established themselves in the SUNYAC in 2025 as a contender in the coming years. With a proper foundation in place, the Bengals will look to continue towards their goal of their first conference title in program history.
