THE MATCHUP… The Bengals are set to kick off their championship season as they will head to Brockport for SUNYAC Championships. Last season, the men took home fifth overall while the women finished fourth. On the men's side, the last SUNYAC title for indoor was the 2013-14 season while the women last earned a team title the 2014-15 season.
THE BENGAL MEN BREAKDOWN… After posting a strong sophomore campaign,
Terrell Price (Depew, NY/Depew) aims to lead the men's side in the sprint events. Price will race the 60-meter and 200-meter sprints where he sits .10 off the top seed in the 60-meter.
Sidney Morris (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) looks to repeat as the 800-meter indoor champion
Pablo Ortiz (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East),
Luke Triplet (Depew, NY/Depew),
Ricky Curiel (East Amherst, NY/Clarence), and
Ian Kruger (North Tonawanda, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) will make their indoor championship debuts spread out across 800-meter, one mile run, 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter.
Noah Holden (Clarence Center, NY/Clarence) and
Josh Mayer (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) will also race in the distance events for the Bengals.
Rounding out the running events will be top-seeded
Jalil Coppedge (Bronx, NY/Ralph R. McKee) in the 60-meter hurdles, who finished second in the event a year ago, as he will be joined by
Julius Arias (Lackawanna, NY/Lackawanna),
Jasiah Cole (Staten Island, NY/Susan E. Wagner),
Tajkeoni Ryan (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), and
Nolan Lyon (North Tonawanda, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield). Buffalo State will also race the 4x400-meter and distance medley relays, will have
Quinn Grover (Buffalo, NY/Alden) and Chrisitan Chance (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream) competing in the triple and long jumps, and
Harrison Barrett (wheatfield, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) manning the heptathlon.
On the throwing side, the Bengals will send a four man crew in
Ethan Mitrano (Penfield, NY/Penfield),
Bryan Honan (Cortland, NY/Cortland),
Matthew Thompson (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa), and Donovan Dubard (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) who will each compete in the shot put and weight throw. Mitrano, Thompson, and DuBard will each make their indoor championship debuts while Honan aims to improve on a fifth place finish in the weight throw from last season.
THE BENGAL WOMEN BREAKDOWN… In her final indoor championship appearance,
Natalia Sawyer (Schenectady, NY/Schalmont) aims to lead the women's side one last time as she will race the 200-meter and 400-meter as well as the 60-meter hurdles. Sawyer swept all three events as last year's championship meet while earning the SUNYAC Most Valuable Performer of the Meet and setting the meet record in the 400-meter at 56.58 seconds. Joining Sawyer in the 200-meter will be
Shamiah Brown (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) and
Nisaa Emery (Croton-on-Hudson, NY/Hendrick-Hudson) while Brown and
Madison MacNeill (Buffalo, NY/West Seneca West) will race the 400-meter.
In the mid-distance and distance events,
Katelyn Becker (Buffalo, NY/School for Applied Tech),
Lexi Hoffman (Buffalo, NY/Kenmore East), and
Jorja Smith (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) will be spread across the 800-,eter, 3,000-meter, and 5,000-meter runs. Buffalo State will also race the 4x400-meter and distance medley relays.
Heidi House (Sanborn, NY/Starpoint) and MacNeill will compete in the high jump for the Bengals. House will also compete in the pentathlon. In the throwing events,
Nyla Wilson-Epps (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry) will compete in the weight throw and shot put.
Iliana Graves (Fairport, NY/Fairport) will join Wilson-Epps in the shot put.
ASSESSING THE COMPETITION… Buffalo State will see the likes of Alfred State, Cortland, Fredonia, Morrisville, Oneonta, Oswego, Plattsburgh, Potsdam, Penn State-Behrend, Cobleskill, and Delhi.
Last season, Cortland swept both the men's and women's side with Oneonta in second on both sides. Fredonia took third on the men's side and Delhi finished third on the women's side to round out the top-three. Among active SUNYAC schools, Fredonia leads the way with 16 team titles on the men's side while the Cortland women lead the way with 19 team titles all-time.
