BUFFALO, NY – Bryan Honan (Cortland, NY/Cortland) and
Natalia Sawyer (Schenectady, NY/Schalmont) of the Buffalo State track and field team are set to compete at NCAA Outdoor Championships this week hosted at Veteran's Memorial Stadium on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Honan is set to make his championship meet debut while Sawyer will make the seventh and final appearance of her career.
Honan will compete on Saturday in the hammer throw after posting a school record mark of 58.74 meters at SUNYAC Championships on his way to a second place finish. He enters the field seeding 14
th overall and is one of two athletes from the SUNYAC in the event, joining Even Collette of Cortland. Honan is also the first thrower from Buffalo State to compete at NCAA Championships since Jordan Fuentes back in 2013 where he competed in the discus throw.
James Cassidy of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps is the top overall seed in the event after posting a mark of 65.01 meters back in March. Cassidy was the runner-up in the event last season.
Sawyer will be competing in her third NCAA Outdoor Championship and seventh overall. She will race the prelims of the 400-meter hurdles on Thursday with finals taking place on Saturday. Seeded with a time of 59.76 seconds, Sawyer is one of four athletes in the field under the one minute barrier as she is seeded third overall. She won the event at SUNYAC Championships and is a two-time national champion in the event. Should Sawyer earn All-America honors in the event, she will tie Jazlyn Porter with eight All-America honors, good for the second most in program history (Jazmin Dunham currently holds the highest total with 11 All-America honors).
Arielle Chechile of Tufts is the top overall seed in the event at 59.05 with Nora Chen of Rochester seeded second at 59.61. Following Sawyer, JoJo Tyynismaa of Wartburg is the only other athlete to run under one minute in the event this year. Tyynismaa led the way finishing third in the event last year with Chen crossing the line fourth. All four athletes also competed at this year's NCAA Indoor Championships.
