BROCKPORT, NY—Freshman
Amanda Smyth (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) scored on a penalty kick in overtime to lift visiting Buffalo State (10-5-2/6-2-1) to a 1-0 victory over Brockport (7-8/3-6) in the SUNYAC regular season finale. The Bengals secured the third seed heading into the conference playoffs, marking the best finish in school history.
Buffalo State outshot Brockport 27-16, including 5-0 in overtime. The Bengals also held an 11-3 advantage on corner kicks, but could not break through until Smyth finally netted the game-winner in the 98th minute. The penalty kick was awarded after
Melissa Mahoney (Poughkeepsie/Ketcham) was taken down from behind in the box. Freshman
Linda Banfield (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) made five saves for the Bengals for her first collegiate shutout.
Buffalo State will host No. 6 New Paltz in the SUNYAC quarterfinals on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m. The Bengals will stay fresh for the postseason with a non-conference game at Elmira on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
