BUFFALO, NY—Virginia Porten (Auburn/Auburn) made a diving stop on New Paltz's (7-8-4) fifth penalty kick to push Buffalo State (11-5-3) past the visiting Haws in a SUNYAC quarterfinal game this afternoon at Coyer Field. The game officially ended in a 1-1 draw, but the Bengals advanced to the semifinals, winning the penalty kick shootout, 3-2.

Buffalo State controlled the bulk of play all day, but the Hawks stunned the home squad with an unassisted goal by Shelby Kondelka in the sixth minute. The Bengals were able to pull even, converting on a 2-on-1 breakaway in the 59th minute when Amanda Sauer (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) scored off a pass from Melissa Mahoney (Poughkeepsie/Ketcham). Buffalo State outshot the Hawks, 28-8, for the game and had 13 corner kicks compared to three by New Paltz, but could not break the tie. Porten had just one save in regulation, and Stephanie Vega had eight for the Hawks.

In the shootout, Buffalo State's scored on its first three attempts by Jordan Dudish (Grand Island/Grand Island), Amanda Smyth (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) and Megan Murphy (Liverpool/Liverpool). New Paltz, who shot first, trailed 3-2 before its fifth shooter was thwarted by Porten, sending the Bengals to the semifinals.

Buffalo State advances to the semifinals at Oneonta on Friday and will face second-seeded Plattsburgh at 6:30 p.m.
