BUFFALO, NY—Linda Banfield (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) needed just three saves for her eighth shutout of the season, and Buffalo State (10-4-1/6-1) locked up a home playoff game with a 1-0 victory over visiting Potsdam (5-9-1/2-5) in a SUNYAC game this morning at Coyer Field.
Shannon Yokopovich (Webster/Webster Thomas) provided all the offense needed for Buffalo State when she booted a shot from 30 yards past the Bears' keeper in just the 10th minute. Paula Jones (Buffalo/Amherst) drew an assist on the marker.
Banfield moved one shutout shy of equaling the school's single-season record of nine, set by Sue Hough in 1984. All eight of her shutouts this season have resulted in 1-0 wins for the Bengals. The Bengals dominated the majority of the contest and outshot Potsdam 20-5.
Buffalo State, currently in first place, clinched no worse than second in the regular season standings. The top two teams receive a first-round bye and will host semifinal games on Nov. 6.
Buffalo State will host a non-conference home game against Medaille on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
