New Paltz Survives Women’s Basketball in Overtime, 71-69

Bianca Smiley had 14 points, including forcing overtime with a layup at the end of regulation
Box Score NEW PALTZ, NY—First-place New Paltz (20-2/14-1) scored the final seven points of overtime, including netting the winning points at the free throw line with seven seconds remaining to defeat visiting Buffalo State (11-10/7-7), 71-69, today in a SUNYAC contest.

Ashley Wallace (Lockport/Starpoint) registered her seventh career double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Bengals, and Bianca Smiley (Amherst/Sweet Home) added 14 points and 14 boards.  Olivia Luciani (Syracuse/E. Syracuse-Minoa) added 10 points.

Buffalo State scored the first basket of the game and then never led again until overtime.  New Paltz took a 31-26 lead into the second half, and saw its lead swell to as many as 12 in the second frame.  Buffalo State stormed back and finally pulled even with a buzzer-beater by Smiley at the end of regulation, knotting the score at 60-60. 

In the extra period, Buffalo State grabbed a 69-64 lead with 58 seconds remaining, but New Paltz scored on consecutive possessions, including a 3-pointer to tie it with 32 second left.  The Hawks then capitalized on a late foul and hit both attempts from the charity stripe to earn the win.

Both teams shot 36-percent from the field, but Buffalo State outrebounded the Hawks, 55-42.  New Paltz outscored the Bengals 24-18 at the free throw line, and had 14 more attempts than Buffalo State.

Buffalo State will visit Oneonta tomorrow for a 2 p.m. tip.
