Football falls to Hobart in Liberty League battle

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.— The Buffalo State football team struck first, but Hobart responded with 28 unanswered first-half points, as Buffalo State dropped its road finale to the Statesmen by a 45-21 score in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
  • Thomas Dupee (Brownville, N.Y./General Brown) completed 5 of 15 passes for 47 yards, fumbling once, and also rushed for 46 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.
  • Cam Sionko (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) also saw action, completing 18 of 31 passes for 189 yards, throwing two touchdowns and an interception.
  • Tariq Nelson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Boys and Girls) caught six passes for 68 yards.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A pair of well-timed fake handoffs led to Buffalo State's first touchdown, as Dupee completed a 63-yard touchdown drive with a 18-yard touchdown run.
  • Hobart responded with a scoring drive of their own, as David Krewson scored on a 23-yard touchdown run.
  • After a Buffalo State three-and-out, Hobart got the ball in Bengal territory, and Rayshawn Boswell scored two plays later on the ground.
  • Early in the second quarter, Sionko's pass was intercepted by Jared Leake, and Boswell scored his second touchdown of the game three plays later as Hobart led 21-7.
  • The Statesmen forced the Bengals to punt, then drove down the field as Tim Denham Jr capped the drive with a 26-yard touchdown run, leading 28-7.
  • On the ensuing 'State drive, Forde Emmett forced a Dupee fumble on the sack, as he recovered the ball for the Statesmen.
  • The Buffalo State defense held, as Rob DiGregorio missed a 45-yard field goal into the wind.

  • After Sciandra successfully converted an onside kick, Buffalo State moved the ball into Hobart territory, but Sionko was sacked by Jamien Bliss on a 4th-and-2 play, and the Statemen ran two plays to end the contest.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Krewson completed 9 of 19 passes for 119 yards, adding 35 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
  • Denham Jr. rushed for 213 yards on 20 carries, scoring thrice.
  • Boswell, the conference's leading rusher entering the week, was held to 89 yards on eight carries, scoring twice.
  • James Miele caught two balls for 47 yards.
  • Bliss led the defense with eight tackles, three solo, adding 1 ½ sacks.
  • Hobart outgained Buffalo State by a 465-326 margin, including a 346-90 edge on the ground.
 
 
UP NEXT
Buffalo State will finish the 2021 season, hosting St. Lawrence at Coyer Field on Saturday, Nov. 13 at noon. The Bengals will honor the Pioneers of Bengal Football, bringing back members of the 1980 and 1981 teams. They will also honor their 2021-22 seniors.
