Women’s Basketball heads to Cortland and Brockport in final regular season weekend

BUFFALO, NY – The Buffalo State women's basketball team looks to continue its winning ways, traveling to Cortland and Brockport with SUNYAC Tournament positioning on the line.
 
SUNY Cortland will host Buffalo State this Friday at 5:30 p.m., before the Bengals head to Brockport for the season finale Saturday at 2 p.m.

Eye on the Bengals
 
  • The Bengals (14-8 overall, 11-5 SUNYAC) return to action after an impressive performance this past Tuesday, a 65-58 triumph over league-leading Cortland.
  • The Bengals, guaranteed a top-four spot in the upcoming SUNYAC Tournament, can move up to as high as second place with wins this weekend and one loss by Geneseo and New Paltz.
  • Buffalo State has won five games in a row, and currently leads the SUNYAC in rebounds per game (44.9), defensive rebound average (32.7, 11th nationally), and free throws made (290).
  • Katie Villarini (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) tallied her league-leading eighth double-double of the season, scoring 20 points and adding 13 rebounds this past Tuesday. She's now the sixth player in school history to score 500+ points in a season, with 511 points. She leads the conference in scoring average (23.2), assist to turnover ratio (1.8), and defensive rebounds per game (6.9).
  • Tashawni Cornfield (Gowanda, NY/Putham) also had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, adding two assists and two steals on Tuesday.
  • Cornfield leads the conference in steals by averaging 3.1 per game, and was named the SUNYAC Player of the Week last week after averaging 18.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, and an impressive 7.0 steals per game, shooting 48.5 percent from the field coming off the bench.
Canvassing Cortland
 
  • Cortland enters the weekend with an 18-4 overall record and a 14-2 mark in SUNYAC contests.
  • The Red Dragons are still poised to win the regular season crown with a victory this weekend, having won 17 games in a row, including the first 14 games in conference, before losing to New Paltz and Buffalo State in consecutive contests.
  • The Red Dragons currently average 65.4 points per game and lead the conference in assists.
  • Cortland is also a perfect 9-0 at home this season and has a sterling 22-1 record in Cortland over the last two seasons.
  • Maggie Malone currently leads the team in scoring averaging 10.8 points per game.
 
 
Brockport Breakdown
 
  • Brockport is fighting to earn the final playoff spot, sitting with a 10-12 overall record and a 5-11 mark in conference action.
  • The Golden Eagles travel to Brockport on Friday before hosting the Bengals in the season finale.
  • Brockport is two games back of Potsdam, which holds the final playoff spot, and a game behind of Fredonia. The Golden Eagles need a pair of wins and losses by both Potsdam and Fredonia to return to the postseason.
  • Despite the record, Brockport has a positive scoring margin (1.7), as they average 57.5 points per game while giving up just 56.4 on the defensive end.
  • Anna Felice leads the team in scoring average (11.9), while Molly Mahony leads the team with 5.9 assists per game.
