SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Four members of the Buffalo State softball team – senior outfielder
Oriana Castello (Pearl River, N.Y./Nanuet), senior infielders
Taylor Benton (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara-Wheatfield) and
Kayla Wolinski (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster), and freshman infielder
Sarah Congelosi (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central) – earned All-SUNYAC softball honors, as the conference announced its honorees on Thursday, May 12. Castello earned first team status, while Benton, Wolinski, and Congelosi were named to the second team.
Castello earns her second consecutive first team honor in 2022. The 2021 Julie Lenhart Co-Player of the Year, Castello continued her prowess at the plate and in the field, leading the squad with a .410 (50-of-122) batting average and 39 runs scored. She led the SUNYAC with 24 stolen bases. She also drove in 18 runs and hit her first career home run against Brockport. On the mound, Castello made three appearances, posting a 3.00 earned run average, with two strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
Castello will enter her final season with the Bengals with an impressive .389 batting average, tallying 121 hits, 25 doubles, 87 runs scored, 40 stolen bases, and 47 RBI.
Benton earns her third consecutive all-conference honor in her final season. She tallied a .360 (41-for-114) batting average in 32 starts, sharing the team lead with 23 RBI. She also tallied 15 doubles, 24 runs scored, and tallied a home run. During the season, the senior tallied hitting streaks of five and seven games, which included a 4-for-4 performance with three doubles and three RBI in a victory over Oswego on April 2.
Benton finishes her Bengal career with 104 career hits, batting .339 with 31 doubles, nine home runs, 60 RBI, and 69 runs scored in 95 games played.
Wolinski earns her first all-conference honor in her final season. The third baseman finished her season tied for second nationally with a program-record 21 doubles, equaling a mark set by
Kyrstin Lekki 10 seasons ago. Wolinski tallied a .388 batting average (45-of-116) in 36 starts, driving in 23 runs, tied for tops on the team.
Wolinski was impressive late in the season, earning SUNYAC Softball Athlete of the Week honors on April 25. She also ended the season with a 13-game hitting streak. In her two-year career, the Lancaster native tallied a .339 batting average with 24 doubles, 41 RBI, and 29 runs scored in 63 games played.
Congelosi is honored with her first all-conference honor after an impressive rookie season. Congelosi hit .387 (24-for-62) in 25 games, adding 14 runs scored and eight RBI. She was a force for the Bengals down the stretch, hitting .410 in conference games and held a 13-game hitting streak, which included five multi-hit games, including a 3-for-4 performance with three runs scored in a crucial extra-inning victory over Plattsburgh on April 30. Congelosi was also a perfect 12-for-12 in stolen base attempts.
The Bengals finished the 2022 season with 15 victories, going 15-21 overall and winning seven games in SUNYAC action.
