2024 Football Season Recap

BUFFALO, NY – The Buffalo State football team took another significant step forward this season as head coach Lazarus Morgan and his squad earned their most wins in a season since 2017 as well as their first Liberty League win since 2019.

The Bengals finished the year with a record of 3-7 (1-5 Liberty League) on the season. Buffalo State earned a pair of wins early in the season, dominating Hilbert 42-6, and defeating Alfred State 12-0 for their first Homecoming Game win since 2018.

Buffalo State later went on to defeat the University of Rochester in early November for their first conference win since 2019. Coincidently, that last win also came against the Yellowjackets. The Bengals handed Rochester their one and only home loss of the season.

Individually, two Bengals wrote their names into the record books this season. Amir Cameron (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) entered his first full season as the starting quarterback and made immediate impact. In the team's home opener against Hilbert, Cameron threw for five touchdown passes to match the program record while also throwing for 171 yards. Five touchdown passes had been accomplished four previous times in program history, but not since Kyle Hoppy back in 2014 against Waynesburg. Also setting records this season was Nick Sciandra (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) who nailed a 53-yeard field goal against Alfred State for the longest field goal in Bengal history. This was also the second time in his career Sciandra had hit a 50+ yard field goal (51 yards in 2023 against Hilbert).

On the defensive side of the ball, Sincere Green (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown) was a force on a very strong Bengals' defense. Green led the Liberty League with 17.0 tackles for loss while also registering 78 total tackles, a forced fumble, 4.5 sacks, and an interception. Green was the engine of a Buffalo State defense that was second in the conference in forced fumbles, third in fumble recoveries, and fourth in sacks.

Morgan's squad saw six All-Liberty League selections giving him 21 conference selections in his short tenure. Alex Westcott (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) earned a first team selection for a third straight year while Green earned First Team status for the first time in his career. Earning Second Team recognition was Kenneth Mosley (Buffalo, NY/Kenmore West) and Basiaka Butcher (White Plains, NY/Valhalla). Justin Brown (Brooklyn, NY/Abraham Lincoln) and Quadir McEachin (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) were honorable mention picks.

Morgan also saw 13 of his athletes named to the Liberty League All-Academic Team as Ian Behrens (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster), Nicholas Bradt (Gloversville, NY/Gloversville), Jeffrey Burgess (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster), Amir Cameron (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison), Derek Dishaw (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee), Dominic Ferguson (Buffalo, NY/Kenmore East), Jason Gatti-Ezard (Rochester, NY/Spencerport), Jay Hawk (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia), Camdyn Honan (Rochester, NY/Athena), Caleb Kruzicki (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South), Julian Maloney (Buffalo, NY/West Seneca West), Samuel Palmesano (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post), and Sebastian Sierra (Farmingdale, NY/HHH East) were recognized for the efforts in the classroom. That total doubles what Morgan's team accomplished in his first two seasons combined and is the most All-Academic selections since the Bengals joined the Liberty League in 2019.

The Bengals football program is certainly trending in the right direction. As a young core continues to grow and gain more experience, Buffalo State hopes to be back in the postseason race for the first time since 2017.
