2024-25 Women's Basketball Season Recap

BUFFALO, NY – The Buffalo State women's basketball team took another step forward this season as they continued to rebuild back to their winning ways. The Bengals saw multiple improvements including defeating New Paltz for the first time since 2022 and just the second time since 2015.

On the year, the Bengals scored 1,293 points with 901 total rebounds, 224 steals, and 40 blocks. That is the most points and steals in a season since their 2021-22 campaign. As a team, the Bengals shot 34.6% from the field which was the highest since 2021-22.

One of the top moments from the 2024-25 season was the Bengals thrilling victory over New Paltz back in January. After controlling much of the first three quarters, the Bengals were able to hold off a late surge from the Hawks to earn the win.

Individually, multiple Bengals shined throughout the season to help set the table for a strong future. Four Bengals started all 25 games this season in Ashley Tucker (Buffalo, NY/Kenmore West), Adiya Jones (Washington, DC/McKinley Technology), Maddy Stearns (Clarence, NY/Clarence), and Chyann Kelly (Bailey, CO/Platte Canyon). Tucker, Jones, and Stearns each averaged over 11.0 points per game while Jones sat tied for eighth in the conference averaging 7.6 rebounds per game. In addition, Stearns and Jones each finished in the top ten in the SUNYAC in steals per game at 2.1 and 1.8, respectively.

For Jones, she stamped her name into the Buffalo State record books. After tallying 191 total rebounds on the year, Jones finished her four-year career 13th all-time in program history with 608 rebounds. Averaging 6.1 rebounds per game across 99 games played, Jones left her mark on the program as the only four-year member from 2025 senior class.

Another standout was Stearns who started 45 of 47 games played since joining the Bengals. Stearns totaled 489 points, averaging 10.4 per game, with 71 assists, 88 steals, and 239 rebounds. She scored a season-high 31 points against Morrisville where she shot 6-11 from three point range while also posting a double-double, 13 points and 12 rebounds, later in the season against SUNY Canton. Stearns was also a leader on and off the court for Buffalo State.

Overall, the women's basketball program continues to step in the right direction as they continue to move up the standings towards a postseason berth.
