Ten Questions with Men’s Hockey senior Jon Colley

With the cancellation of the remainder of the spring season and the winter championships, Buffalo State wanted to reintroduce the weekly series entitled "10 Questions with..." providing an inside look at some of our student-athletes. This week's spotlighted student-athlete is Buffalo State men's hockey senior Jon Colley (Stouffville, ON).

1. How long have you played hockey?

Answer: I have played hockey for about 20 years.  I started skating on a frozen pond at the age of 3 or 4 and never looked back.

2. What is your favorite thing about Buffalo State?

Answer: My favorite part about Buffalo State is the close-knit community within a large city.  The campus is big enough to have your freedom but also small enough to not feel overwhelmed.  The athletics facilities are as good as it gets in D-III and many amazing people make up the athletics community.  I also enjoy what the City of Buffalo has to offer during my free time.  There is always something to do with friends and teammates and I have made memories that will last a lifetime.

3. Would you rather lose or never play again?

Answer: I would rather always lose.  You can still gain many valuable lessons even if it means losing every game.  The comradery and memories you make with your teammates daily are something you will cherish forever no matter what the outcome.

4. What are the top three things on your bucket list?

Answer: 1) Visit the Spengler Cup hockey tournament in Switzerland.  I would love to cheer on Canada's hockey team in Switzerland over Christmas break one year.  Switzerland has many beautiful landmarks in the Alps, there is amazing hockey to watch, and many other Canadian's make the trip for the awesome party. 2) Stagecoach country music festival.  As a country music fan, I would love to go to California and attend one of the biggest country music festivals on the planet!
3) Rent a private yacht.  I think it would be cool to rent a private yacht with a bunch of friends and travel around for a week visiting cool spots like Greece or Italy.

5. If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Answer:  I would say chicken parmesan and penne.  As hockey players we eat it on almost every road trip before every game so I would say I am already used to it.  Can never go wrong with Italian food.

6. Where are you from?

Answer: Stouffville, ON in Canada. Farm country about 2 hours from Buffalo and 45 minutes north of Toronto.

7. What is your favorite thing to do in your free time?

Answer: There are many things I enjoy doing during my free time but to narrow it down I would say I love hanging out with friends, golfing, cooking and all things hockey.  I enjoy watching hockey and being "a student of the game."  Learning different approaches about the game from watching hockey, analyzing film, reading articles, and doing research is one thing I love to do almost every day.

8. If money does not matter, what is your ideal job?

Answer:  My dream job would be a golfer on the PGA tour.  I find that golfers live the best life.  The best golfers in the world make millions of dollars and there is not much stress on the body unlike hockey or football.  You get to do your job outdoors in great weather while playing the most historic and picturesque golf courses in the world.

9. What kinds of things are you doing to keep yourself occupied while at home?

Answer: I have been watching lots of Netflix shows since being quarantined. Some good shows I have watched are Ozark, Jack Ryan, and Waco.  I am also fortunate enough to have a gym in my house, so I have been hitting the gym a lot getting ready for summer.  I hope to get out and begin golfing when the courses open in Ontario, but I have been working a bit on my short game in my backyard.

10. Do you have any tips for staying healthy and active while at home?

Answer:  I believe the best way to stay healthy and active is to stick to a routine.  As athletes we are used to following a daily schedule, so I believe setting up a plan for each day is the best way to stay healthy both mentally and physically. With the weather getting warmer it is important to get out and enjoy some fresh air.  Try to be outdoors by going for walks or runs and maybe even work on your tan.  There are also many home workouts online to keep your body active.  These workouts are for all skill levels and range from having no equipment to full gyms.  Feel free to reach out to your coaches as many of them will have ideas for you to stay fit as well.
