This Week In Buffalo State Athletics - November 15, 2021

BUFFALO, NY – Last week marked the end of the 2021 fall sport season. With the first snow fall of the school year over the weekend, we can now completely turn our focus to the winter sports. This week, women's basketball hosts three games, including the Betty Abgott Invitational from Thursday to Saturday. Men's hockey hosts two SUNYAC conference games on Friday and Saturday evening. Men's basketball has its first home games in nearly two years, hosting the Community Health Center of Buffalo Classic on Friday and Saturday. There are so many events to attend, we hope to see you repping your Bengal Pride at all of them!

Football (0-10, 0-6 Liberty League)
Last Week:
The Bengals closed out the season with a 41-6 loss to Saint Lawrence on Saturday afternoon at Coyer Field. Thomas Dupee (Brownville, NY/General Brown) and Nas Jackson (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph's) connected on a 14-yard touchdown in their final collegiate game. Before the game, Buffalo State honored their 20 seniors, and members of the 1980 and 1981 "Pioneers of Bengal Football" team were celebrated at halftime.

Women's Basketball (1-1)
Last Week:
The Bengals opened up the season with a loss to Rochester on Tuesday evening, but responded with a dominant performance against Hilbert at home on Saturday evening. Tashawni Cornfield (Gowanda, NY/Putham) led the Bengals with 27 points, and Katie Villarini tallied a 23 point, 10 rebound double-double.

Honors and Recognition:

This Week:
Buffalo State hosted three non-conference games during the week, including the Betty Abgott Invitational from Thursday to Saturday. Villarini led the Bengals to a 71-57 victory over Pitt-Bradford in the previous meeting of the teams in 2019.

Men's Hockey (2-3-0, 1-0-0 SUNYAC)
Last Week:
The Bengals posted a 1-2 record over an up and down week. Buffalo State dominated from start to finish in a 3-0 victory over Morrisville on Wednesday as Nikita Kozyrev (Tallinn, Estonia/Springfield Jr. Blues) scored a hat-trick and Emil Norrman (Kungsbacka, Sweden/Dells Ducks) posted his first shutout of the year. Stretches of inconsistent play doomed the Bengals in two non-conference losses to Hobart and Elmira over the weekend.

This Week:
This weekend, the Bengals will host two conference games, hosing Plattsburgh on Friday evening, and Potsdam on Saturday evening.

Women's Swimming and Diving (0-6)
Last Week:
Maggie Parobek won three individual events and was part of a winning relay, but the Bengals were defeated by Cortland in a dual meet on Saturday afternoon.

The Bengals are off until after the Thanksgiving break, when they travel to participate in the Cortland Invitational on Dec. 3-4.

Men's Basketball (0-1)
Last Week:
The Bengals opened the season on the road against Nazareth on Tuesday evening, falling short in their second-half comeback bid in a 70-65 loss. Sheldon Adams (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) led the Bengals with 15 points, while Aaron Davis (Beacon, NY/Beacon) tallied 14 points.

This Week:
The Bengals host the Community Health Center of Buffalo Classic this weekend, welcoming in Ohio Northern, John Carroll, and Medaille into the Sports Arena.

Women's Hockey (0-5-0, 0-3-0 NEWHL)
Last Week:
Buffalo State dropped two NEWHL games over the weekend, falling to Plattsburgh on Friday afternoon, and to Cortland on Saturday afternoon. Angelina Cruzal (Campbell, CA/San Jose Jr. Sharks) and Tori Fadeley (Buffalo, NY/Cazenovia Chiefs) scored goals for Buffalo State, while Riley Garrow (Akwesasne, NY/St. Lawrence Steel) and Bethany Horvatits (Elma, NY/Cazenovia Chiefs) registered their first career points with assists on the goals.

This Week:
The Bengals head to Pittsburgh, PA for a non-conference matchup with Chatham on Wednesday evening.

Men's Swimming and Diving (1-5)
Last Week:
The 200-yard medley relay team of James Purpura (Cheektowaga, NY/Cleveland Hill), Zach Nau (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport), Sean Mahaney (Alden, NY/Alden), and Wesley Van (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) was victorious, but the Bengals fell to Cortland in a dual meet on Saturday afternoon.
