This Week In Buffalo State Athletics - September 20, 2021

BUFFALO, NY – SUNYAC conference play begins this weekend for the Buffalo State men's and women's soccer teams and continues this week for the women's volleyball team. Men's soccer has their home opener on Tuesday night, and we have a total of six home contests this week. Come out and support your Bengals!

Men's Soccer (5-1-0)
Last Week:
Buffalo State ended last week with a come from behind victory over Grove City to extend their winning streak to five games. Trailing 2-1 with under ten minutes to go in the game, Anthony Roncone (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca East) scored the tying goal, and Zak Shaibi (Buffalo, N.Y./McKinley) scored the game-winner for the Bengals in the 89th minute after dribbling past three defenders and slotting the ball into the back of the net. The Bengals started the week with a 1-0 victory over St. John Fisher on Tuesday night. Theo Pencic (Oslo, Norway/Heltberg) scored the game-winner in the 78th minute on a penalty kick after Moe Saif (Lackawanna, N.Y./Coppell, T.X.) was brought down by a foul inside the penalty box.

This Week:
The Bengals will have their first home games of the season this week, taking on Medaille on Tuesday evening at Coyer Field. They will begin SUNYAC play this weekend by hosting Fredonia on Saturday afternoon. Buffalo State is looking to extend their two-match winning streak against the Blue Devils. In those previous two games, Pencic has tallied five goals and one assist to lead the Bengals to victory.

Women's Cross Country
Last Week:
Kassidy Manke (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) finished first and Clara Sensini (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) finished third to lead the Bengals to victory at the Alfred State Gary Moore XC Invite on Saturday afternoon. It was also Manke's first individual victory in her collegiate career. Mackenzie Luby (Patterson, N.Y./Brewster) finished six and Morgan Ashton (Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro) finished eighth as the Bengals placed four runners inside the top 10 for the first time since September 2017.

Men's Cross Country
Last Week:
The Bengals finished were victorious for the second consecutive meet this weekend. Sembel Koshi (Buffalo, N.Y/Hutch Tech) was the top Buffalo State finisher in second place with a time of 32:07. Nick Abdo (West Valley, N.Y./Springville-Griffith) finished fourth, and Patrick Klinger (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) finished fifth.

Volleyball (4-6)
Last Week:
Buffalo State opened the week by dropping their SUNYAC and home opener to Fredonia in three sets. They bounced back over the weekend by finishing with a 2-1 record at the Buffalo State Bengal Challenge. The Bengals defeated Houghton in a three-set sweep on Friday night, dropped an intense five-set match to Alfred on Saturday morning, and closed out the weekend with a four-set victory over Wells. Liz Schultheis (Holley, N.Y./Brockport) and Samantha Coakley (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) were named to the All-Tournament Team for their performances throughout the weekend.

This Week:
The Bengals have three home matches this week, beginning with Medaille on Tuesday at the Sports Arena. The Bengals swept the Mavericks in their first meeting earlier this year. Buffalo State also hosts SUNYAC conference opponents Cortland and Oswego on Friday and Saturday. The Bengals hold a 31-25 advantage in the all-time series against the Lakers.

Women's Soccer (2-4-0)
Last Week:
The Bengals dropped a non-conference matchup with Houghton on Wednesday night. Macey Gioeli (N. Tonawanda, N.Y./N. Tonawanda) had five shot attempts for the Bengals, while Samantha Kaufman (Cheektowaga, NY/West Seneca East) made four saves in net in 45 minutes of action.

This Week:
Buffalo State hosts Alfred University on Wednesday before traveling to Fredonia to begin SUNYAC play on Saturday. The Saxons own a 2-1-1 advantage in the all-time series. Fredonia defeated Buffalo State 1-0 in their most recent meeting in 2019.

Football (0-2)
Last Week:
Buffalo State dropped their first road game of the season, falling 58-9 to host Cortland on Saturday afternoon. Omar Robinson (Arverne, N.Y./Abraham Lincoln) had a 15-yard touchdown run for the Bengals and finished with a game-high 69 rushing yards.

The Bengals head back out to Central New York this weekend for a non-conference matchup with Morrisville State. Buffalo State holds an 8-2 advantage in the all-time series against the Mustangs.
