THE MATCHUP… The Buffalo State football team returns to action this weekend with their first look at conference play at Union. The Garnet Chargers are 6-0 all-time against the Bengals featuring a 28-6 win last season. The two sides have met each season since the Bengals joined the Liberty League back in 2019.
For the Bengals,
Amir Cameron (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) has thrown for 371 yards and a pair of touchdowns while
JC Dixon II (Niagara Falls, NY/Canisius) has 179 rushing yards with a score.
On the defensive side of the ball,
James Gibbons (Fort Drum, NY/Carthage) and
Brody Stevens (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) each have 20 total tackles on the year. Gibbons and
Adrian Anderson (Buffalo, NY/Middle Early College) each have a sack as well for the Buffalo State defense.
For the Garnet Chargers, Luke Sheehan and Cole Brisson have split time at the quarterback spot combining for nearly 500 yards with four touchdowns. Brady Markowski has been the top rusher for Union with 100 yards on 21 attempts with a touchdown with Kaden Gore leading the receiving room with 12 catches for 146 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Alex Carucci has 24 total tackles and two pass breakups while Jordan Black leads the team with a pair of sacks and five QB hits.
LAST TIME WE MET... The two sides met a year ago on Coyer Field where the Garnet Chargers scored four touchdowns to secure the win.
Cameron threw for 259 yards with a touchdown.
For the Garnet Chargers, Patch Flannigan threw for 131 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 120 yards with a pair of scores.
Union scored in each of the first two quarters to take an early 14-0 lead into the half. Coming out of the break, the Bengals got on the scoreboard with a 53-yard touchdown throw from Cameron. The Garnet Chargers scored a pair of touchdowns in response to extend their lead to 28-6. In the final 15 minutes of action, Union was able to kill over ten minutes of clock with one drive to help secure the win.
OH CAPTAIN! MY CAPTAIN!… Leading the Bengals this season are captains
Amir Cameron and
Brody Stevens. Cameron and Stevens are two key returners for the Bengals this season with Cameron leading the way on the offensive side of the ball and Stevens on the defensive side.
Cameron played in seven games last year, totaling over 1,000 yards with four touchdowns. Stevens appeared in all ten games tallying 66 tackles and three pass breakups.
ABOUT THE BENGALS' COACH… Mike Neale enters his first season leading Buffalo State after most recently serving as the defensive coordinator at Delaware Valley for two seasons. During his time with the Aggies, the team compiled a 16-6 overall record and ranked second in total defense and scoring defense in the country in 2024.
A native on San Diego, Calif., Neale has totaled over 20 years of coaching experience in all three phases as well as a head coach, including 19 years at the Division III level.
UNDERSTANDING UNION… Union welcomes the Bengals for the start of the Liberty League schedule with a record of 1-2 on the year. Following two straight losses to #20 Susquehanna and #24 Cortland, the Garnet Chargers finally got in the win column last week against Morrisville with a 38-17 road win.
Head Coach Jon Drach enters his third season leading Union. In his brief tenure with the Garnet Chargers, the team has compiled a record of 12-12 overall. Drach's squad is coming off an 8-3 (7-0 Liberty League) season in 2025 where they captured the conference regular season title and a trip to the NCAA Championship Tournament where they fell in the first round to Muhlenberg.
